ESPN is laying the foundation to sell its main TV channel directly to consumers as a subscription streaming service, working under the internal codename “Flagship,” ?@jtoonkel
? & ?@bysarahkrouse report.

TL;DR from the article, they don't give any timelines, but the writing is on the wall. ESPN has been making sure it's contracts with cable providers wouldn't stop it from going direct to consumer. They also highlight how cable subscriptions have fallen 11% since 2019 and Disney's revenue from their traditional channels was down $1 Billion this year from $2.8 Billion to $1.8 Billion.
I also don't expect it to be a cheap service. They currently get about $9.50 per cable subscription in the US. How many cable subscribers don't actually watch ESPN, or not enough to subscribe direct? They probably shouldn't charge more than $10 a month for something like this, but they will be very tempted to to make up for what they miss without being tied to a bundle.
I would think the potential timeline lines up with ESPN wanting to make sure they are the home of the NBA. If the NBA sells local rights too, you might just need to subscribe to ESPN to watch all the NBA games.

I would very easily pay $20/month for all of ESPN, meaning i can watch every LSU game regardless of what ESPN affiliated channel it is on, so SECN, SECN+, ESPN+.
All they have to say to SEC fans, and probably Big10 and ACC fans are, $20/month to watch every game from every sport from your school.

If ESPN decouples from cable, cable subscriptions may actually increase.
The carriage charges for ESPN frick the entire price scheme for cable.

This sounds great but their app is easily the worst streaming app.
Hopefully this would solve the SECN+/ESPN+ different logins where I'm prompted to log in via youtube tv or hulu depending on what I'm trying to watch.
I'm prompted to log in damn near every time I open the app. It's a PITA
They also need to communicate with their own system/apps. Ridiculous I have LSU as a favorite that populates at the games and scored at the top of their mobile app but I have to sift through 35 games to find LSU baseball.
They would greatly benefit from a "guide" option like cable or youtube tv has with their channels that I can quickly jump back and forth between channels rather than closing out of one game to find another.
TLDR: app sucks hopefully this improves it

Exactly - and dump YouTube TV.
Netflix, Prime and Discovery with Local are PLENTY of TV. Only real reason to keep a larger streaming service is for sports.

Since Disney also owns Hulu, I wonder if they will package it with Hulu in an effort to be able to charge more.

Don’t care. Stream everything

Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN's president, has talked about this openly for a few years as a "when." They're mindful to not rock the boat but recognize that there's also a lot of lost base out there that would be happy to add sports without everything else in a package (cable, streaming package like YouTube TV, etc).

My thoughts exactly. I think YouTubeTV will be in trouble if ESPN moves forward with this, especially if it's affordable at something like $20/month.
