Well then whats the problem with what i said?
At the very least, the Hornets should force them to give a third guy on their roster, max money
Exactly.
Signing Gasol to an offer sheet means that at least 2 of the 5 out of Gay, Allen, Young, Battier, and Mayo will not be with them next year.
Young, Allen, Battier, and Mayo are all big parts of what Memphis has done over the last month and a half. Just forcing them to give up a couple of these guys is smart for the Hornets. Setting the ball in motion for Rudy Gay to join the Hornets is pure genius.

battier and allen, possibly. they'll sign for cheap though, b/c their value isn't great
perimeter defenders who don't do anything else except the occasional 3 are common

we're giving up ariza now?

Allen is under contract for 2 more years at like 3 million a year. Young is under contract next year for less than 1 million dollars. Battier is a fan favorite in Memphis and will probably sign a multi year deal around 4 million a year. Arthur is under contract and they have Xavier Henry a young player under contract For the next 3 years.
They'll trade Mayo for a 2nd round pick and use that money to keep Gasol. THEY ARE SET.

Yep. 41% FG and 33% 3 are all we need from Ariza but they are far from good.
In the last 5 games of the first round he averaged 17 ppg, 6 rpg, and 3 apg. That was on 46 FG%, 37 3PT%, and 78 FT%. He was also guarded by Bryant and Artest the whole time.
So his shooting was miserable in the first game, but he was extremely solid the rest of the series. I expect Ariza to be better next year going into his second season with the Hornets.

i think this is the 5th year in a row that people have said this

I think what we saw from Ariza in the playoffs is probably his ceiling, but the difference between the 15 ppg elite defender and the disinterested defender that will shoot you out of games is all mental/focus. Motivating underachievers like Ariza is supposed to be what Monty's good at, so I hope for, not expect, a better regular season from Ariza and I expect a similar post season next year.

Spot on.

I would love to hear some realistic solutions to our "problems" from some of the GMs on here...

the CBA may change things

Yeah, that's my point. If Gasol is signed to a big offer sheet and Battier returns, Neither Gay nor Mayo will be back. The Grizzlies aren't going to trot out an 80 million dollar roster after a lock out.

With a 3 that can shoot, Ariza is perfectly capable of playing the 2.

And you know this how ? I just explained to you how the Grizzlies will have virtually the SAME payroll next year that they had this year.
Mayo will be gone no doubt in my mind about that. But if Rudy Gay is traded it will be for another good piece, not some 15 million contract dump like Michael Redd could have been used for this past year.
Mayo will be traded for a 2nd round pick. Gay slides back into the starting lineup.
Conley/Vasquez/Ish Smith
Allen/Gay/Young/Henry
Gay/Battier/Young/Henry
Randolph/Arthur
Gasol/Arthur
They can even give a qualifying offer to Haddaddi for just 400k per year more than he's making now.
Thats 11 total roster spots right there.
All they have to do is find a trade partner for OJ Mayo for a second round pick and a cheap big man and it's virtually the exact same payroll. Something they were willing to do at the trade deadline.

If they match a max offer for Gasol, then 3 years from now the quartet of Randolph, Gasol, Gay, and Conley will combine to make 64 million dollars.
The Grizzlies rank 28th in attendance. Heisley has repeatedly said that he is looking to sell the team. There is no way that they pay 64 million dollars to 4 players.

Mayo and Gay will both be gone. Gay will be traded for someone like Iggy or Kevin Martin. Mayo probably for a non lottery 1st or a decent backup center.

NEXT YEAR they'll be right on the cap line just with those 4 guys' deals, even with a Mayo trade.

Gasol won't get a max contract. He will get a slightly better deal than Perkins got, so around $9-12m.

This whole discussion started with the idea of offering a max contract to Gasol if West opted out. The Hornets would either...
1. Get an excellent young center
2. Screw the division rival Grizzlies
