Lord I think Pels fans have lost their minds. One, Pels need shooters. Two, pg is the position where defense matters the least. I can’t fathom how anyone thinks what Garland could potentially be is a worse fit next to Zion than what Hayes could potentially be.

I don't care what Gary Parrish has to say about our pick.
I grade him a D for his outlook on Hayes.

You can't tell me you can watch this kid shoot and think he can't develop, at a minimum, to have a reliable mid range jump shot.

In the halfcourt, Hayes will be a liability in the short term, unless Gentry wants to get silly and have Hayes set screens for Zion in the pick-and-roll, which might actually work and would be crazy fun to watch. I really love the idea of Zion as a P&R originator, and he running it with Hayes would be unreal.

Agreed. I think this year should be focused on slowly developing Zion as the originator and Hayes learning to set good screens, rim runs, and DHOs. Those two can create a lot of open looks on their own with that foundation.

I keep seeing this and it is just an absolutely ridiculous statement. Not a knock on Hayes, but an non retarded Javele is a multi time all star. He had a 21.8 PER and 5.9 WS last year. Even at his most retarded (in Wash and Denver) he had WS seasons of 5.3 and 4.9.

So saying someone is at worst smart Javale McGee is the equivalent of saying they are at worst a 6-7 WS guy. That’s just an unrealistic floor for most players.

and i'll go back to the projection that says Hayes is the most likely all star in this draft after Zion, b/c that's how high his floor is, a non retarded Javele McGee.

Garland is a project dumbass.
He's got about a 30% chance of turning into something useful, since no one knows how he will project in the NBA.
I guarantee you Hayes plays at least 12 years in the NBA. Projections have him as the most likely player to make an all star team after Zion in this draft.
They both are projects.

He's not the only one.. Just about every draft grade by sports reporters say the same thing of the Hayes pick at 8.. So whose opinions have more weight???the guys getting paid to research these prospects or the self proclaimed "experts" on this board that get defensive and act like other people no nothing about basketball for disagreeing with the pick

Gasol played most of his career without a 3pt shot and isn’t particularly athletic.

Once the game transitioned to 5’s who can switch and shoot, Gasol did it. Most of his career he was a great defender who could step out and hit a jumper. He just added on to skills he already had. Hayes is basically starting from scratch.

Point being, just because it’s not part of his game now doesn’t mean Hayes will never develop a shot.

Maybe he will develop a shot. I’m just going off of the type of player he is projected to be, and that player does not fit with Zion.

College basketball analysts like Parrish and Bilas see things much more from the finished product perspective, not the NBA projection angle. Actually, that's an insult to Bilas who has a far more creditable opinion than Parrish.

To say a guy "can't shoot" when he wasn't asked to shoot at all is ignorance personified. Hayes is a project who needs to get stronger and learn the game more as a big man but he can definitely shoot with touch to end up a very good shooter.

If a guy can shoot you never ask him not to shoot ever.

Very few "sports reporters" know anything about the sport they are covering. I could care less what they have to say, especially ones that are paid to write articles that generate clicks.
Go watch PTI and Around the Horn for your opinions, i'll just watch basketball and use my own bball iq from years of playing basketball and watching this franchise since they arrived to form my opinions. I know i won't always be right, but i'm not too proud to admit when i'm wrong.

Like Anthony Davis?
This kid was playing football 2 years ago and hit a growth spurt. It takes these 7 footers time to learn how to use their body and figure out how to shoot. Lucky for them, it's their job to figure it out, and they have plenty of time to work on it.

Lol exactly. I was going to reply to him but this is the perfect start.

Shaka Smart and John Calipari saw 6-11 athletic late bloomers on teams with scoring options and said, "You block shots and run the floor, Freshman. That's all we need you to do to win games."

There's also a reason why neither of them are NBA coaches. It's a different game on that level.

exactly. I would imagine most here are LSU fans. did you not notice the huge jump LSU got when Bigby-Williams started playing more? offensive boards and rim protection like that at the college level makes a world of difference.

and how long did it take the Bucks to get there with Giannis?

Giannis wasn’t Zion coming into the league. Look at how the Bucks started building around him once he started showing what he was.

We know the type of player Zion is, and Pels should have a head start putting the right guys around him. Zion can’t reach his full potential surrounded by guys who can’t shoot and a big who clogs up the lane.

You can't compare him to Anthony Davis..if that was the case he would of been at least in consideration for 1st overall pick and went second

His mom is one of the best women to play the game. His dad was a professional football player. I doubt they would let him fail and will help him out with the process. He’s raw but it’s too fast to dislike the pick right now. We have to just be patient and see.
