1. I've been a Saints fan for 20 years but there comes a point in your life when you realize that the organization isn't being run correctly and its time to pick up the anchor.
I'm 23 years old...I remember being a fan of this team since I was in diapers.
quote:
2. Only fools wander around with blind loyalty in the dark.
It's not blind loyalty if you're a New Orleanian who identifies with your team, win or lose. Would you be so quick so say "I'm not going to be an LSU fan anymore" if they were to suddenly suck arse for a 10 year stretch?
quote:
3. Most of you [80%] probably started watching the Saints during two major periods: Saints beating the Rams in the playoffs with Aaron Brooks or during 2006.
Refer to point 1 to see why I don't fall in this category.
quote:
4. The Saints have been around since 1967. They have won how many playoff games? How many times have they reached the post season? How many Super Bowls?
2. 8. 0.
quote:
I mean seriously, if this was a winning franchise then I'd understand why my lack of faith would be considered an insult.
It just goes to prove you only like a team if they're winning. It's people like you that piss me off so much. Being a "fan" is more than just "blind loyalty in the dark" as you put it. It's forming a bond with that team. I remember sitting in Tiger Stadium as a kid watching LSU getting shalacked by the likes of Texas A&M, Florida, Alabama. I stuck by the Tigers through the Curly Hallman days...and although it took almost 10 years, LSU was able to recover and make itself prominent again.
quote:
Wearing bags on the head during the 3rd quarter was considered tradition for many years.
And even though those fans were pissed with the team, they still showed up because its THEIR team. It's like that one relative you may not like because they get on your nerves...try your patience...whatever. At the end of the day though, they're still family...and you're still going to be there when they need you. I'm guessing you're not a New Orleanian...that's why you don't get it.
quote:
In fact, during 2005 how many people showed up in Tiger Stadium to watch the Saints play? I know all you white boys weren't displaced. Oh, thats right. Hardly any of you.
I was there...as were the few thousand others who don't follow your mentality. Also...have you ever stopped to consider that most NFL stadiums are nowhere near the size of college stadiums?? Oh...were YOU there??? Just curious.

Identifying with a corporation that bleeds money? Who gives people that, for the most part, without their athletic ability would make no more money then 95% of the fans? You can't identify with this team. This isn't a grassroots organization. Its a business that chose to set up shop in New Orleans. Players go where the money is not because they love the city. There isn't a franchise in any city that doesn't make money.
As for LSU, I grew up in the community and was part of school, in some sense, since I was small whether it was through Day Care, summer programs, or U-High. I even graduated from college there. So, no, there isn't a blind loyalty. The school gave me something in return, an Education. Even afterwards, they gave me my first job after I graduated with a great salary.
Sports is the last reasons I support LSU.

Congratulations. I said 80%. You are in the 20%.

Hardly something to be proud of considering we have won two playoff games 41 years.

No, I sat in the stands in the late 80's and through the mid-90's. Even when the magic was suppossed to be brough back during the Dinardo era.
In fact, I attend less games now that they are winning then when they were losing.

Probably the most insane asinine line I've ever heard. They don't need you. They need the revenue. Thats why when tickets dont sell they threaten to move. Have we forgot Benson's threats just 5 short years ago? Oh thats right. THEY NEED YOU SO BAD THEY THREATEN TO MOVE THE TEAM EVERY COUPLE YEARS TO BARGAIN FOR MORE MONEY OUT OF THE STATE OF LOUISIANA. Thats right, I forgot. Those millionaires really need you.

Also...have you ever stopped to consider that most NFL stadiums are nowhere near the size of college stadiums??
Yeah, I did. Then I realized how 1/2 of 90,000 is 45,000 and there weren't even near that many people in there. I'd say less then maybe 20,000. Maybe 20,000. Check out this photo. That bottom section looks really packed now doesn't it. If I remember right didn't the Saints fans actually throw shite at Benson? Just love them Saints.

I'm aware that to the ORGANIZATION, I'm just a number...as I am with the LSU athletic department...even with the university itself. I identify with the city the team represents. I am not a fan or supporter of Tom Benson...and I'm well aware that this team could literally move at any time...and that he pulls his stunts to get more money. Again, I support the Saints because of the city they represent.

I also have deep ties to LSU, thanks in part to my grandfather, who's photo is hanging in LSU's Hall of Distinction.

Thanks...I'm glad you and I both can do math.

I never said this was a fact I'm proud of...however, many teams have sucked for MANY years in the past and have only recently risen to prominence...see the Indianapolis Colt, Tampa Bay Bucs...even the New England Patriots. With the way the league is today, there will be a winner in New Orleans sooner rather than later.

That's another thing you and I actually have in common.

I'm actually sitting in the upper-deck...sorry, as a college student who at the time was only making about $200 every two weeks, I could only afford to sit in the "cheap" seats.

When I saw the title to your post, the first thing I thought was that you can go to hell. Thats the problem with a lot of Saints "fans". We lose and you hate them, but when Sunday comes around here you are cheering for them again with a smile on your face when they score a TD. Get outta here yankee. I don't care what happens, I LOVE WATCHING THEM PLAY. I would love a playoff team every year but that doesn't happen. So you can take you gay arse title and shove it up your arse. Go jump on the Cowboy bandwagon or some shite like that you homo. You should never show your arse on here again, because in my opinion, you just declared yourself as NOT being a Saints fan.

You've been rooting for the Saints for 20 years? I've been a Saints fan a little longer than that.
I remember Archie -- a HOF talent on a semi-pro team.
I remember John Mecom -- the worst NFL owner in
history. Bill Bidwill is a Rooney by comparison.
I remember the Falcons going 4-12 every year -- and two of those wins would be against the Saints.
I remember losing to the winless -- as in EVER -- Tampa Bay Bucs.
I remember the MNF catastrophe against the Raiders.
I remember the 1-15 season.
With all that, I never stopped being a Saints fan.
Do you think I'm going to abandon them when they're 1 game below .500 and have one of the best QBs and THE most explosive player in the entire NFL on the team????
You need to root for the Cowboys, you'll feel right at home. Anybody who could even suggest the Saints should move to LA was never a real fan anyway.
So no hard feelings, and goodbye.

Kafaka I identify...
I saw the first John Gilliam kickoff (on TV). I grew up with the Saints. In 1982 I moved to Alaska. It had been 15 years of futility then and it was 5 more years until their first winning record. There was very little Saints coverage to be found. If I ever was going to change allegiance, it was then. I even tried to for a season or so. It was useless though. I had a subscription to some Saints rag (was it Saints Weekly?)and could never kick them. My co-workers chided me "You can't fool us, we know you are black and gold."
To anyone considering abandoning Saints fandom now, I say if it is in you there is no use trying to fight it. Embrace them like the Cubs faithful- win or lose, fans forever. NOLA fans deserve a SB trophy like no others IMO- just like LSU with the crystal balls. The Steelers and Niners have a few Lombardi's. They both had as many decades of futility as the Saints before entering a dominant era.
This could be the dawn of a new golden age for the franchise, better than the Mora contending years. Saints and Superbowl mentioned in the same sentence doesn't evoke laughter. It is to be seen if it happens but the nucleus is coming together. I'll be here regardless but how sweet it will be ala Red Sox when it happens.

Why is everyone wasting their time trying to tell the guy to frick off? If he wants to root for someone else, that is his business. Don't let him affect how ya'll feel.

Hey, I'm in that picture.
BTW, did you have the express consent of the New Orleans Saints and National Football League to reproduce images of that game.

Im 51 and remember the Saints opening kickoff, Im not going to quit on them now. I cant stand a punk that picks out a winning team and all of a sudden ,thats thier team. Sure have been a lot of new colts fans latly. About the cowboys ,heres a teller, they will do anything to win , that includes imbracing a jerk who a few years ago was jumping up and down on thier star. And wtf is this sheet

I don't know what team he's gonna want to embrace, with his last couple of posts, it seems that he sees the saints as a major corporation taking his money, wouldn't you have to say the same for all the other teams as well?

Exactly what I was thinking...and as much as he wants to be oblivious to it all, college sports are pretty much the same thing.

I'll never leave this team unless they leave New Orleans. If they lose every game for 10 years, I'll be whoopin' it up when they finally get that win. The loss Monday hurt me, too, but you gotta get over it, realize it's a long season, and move on.

I'll defend you, LSUDonkeyKong.
This thread is a perfect example of the sort of blind anger that is ruining the moral fabric of our country. More specifically, you people have such an idiosyncratic idea of what it means to be a fan that you are outraged by someone who simply has a different notion. These kinds of reactions are moral reactions, don't you people see that? He has done nothing morally wrong! Why do you call someone stupid simply for recognizing how often the Saints ruin his mood?
Frankly, this past game has made me admit what I always knew: being a Saints fan is like being in an abusive relationship. For some people, there is a limit to the emotional beatings we take before ending the relationship. Sure, some fans are in love with the team and will never leave no matter how horrible it makes their lives. Love, however, is a two-way relationship, so why do the Saints so rarely give us anything back?

Priams,
I just get tired of seeing the same people bitch and whine on this board. I consider a fan to be somebody who casually watches the team but in the end realizes its entertainment. But others don't understand the last part.
When I attend games, I go home having spent $150 on ticket/food and knowing the 4th string tailback just made a $85,000 game check when he didn't do much more then I did the whole game. He sat and watched.
I just had enough with professional sports in general. The Saints just happen to be crappy and lose. They could be the Patriots and I'd still recognize this crap for what it truly is: A racket.
This is the same reason I don't buy LSU football tickets. Its become a joke. $50 a ticket for an SEC game and $45 for Tulane! And they don't even pay their players. Imagine if the players could earn revenue!
I just realize what this fan business has become and I've just gotten sick of it. Its all about money and in the end, you are no more part of the team then I am.
So, I'll continue to do what I do. Save my money and be a casual fan [LSU]. Because either you people take sports way too seriously or its filling emotional voids left in your life by other things.
The response to this thread has truly been insane.
