So legit question here - deadline is July 16th, right? So what happens if we get to the 17th - he isn't allowed to negotiate anymore until the season is over, correct? He just plays on the +1 yr Franchise tag?
Seems kinda small in that case.
A) We know he's playing for the saints this season
B) Even if July 16th passes, a deal will eventually get done even if it lingers in to next offseason.
C) The only thing it REALLY hurts is the Saints org. You guys are going to have to pay the guy some serious $$$, which will hurt the salary cap $'s.

No it wont dummy. There is a fan money pool, duhhh. Plus, benson just bought the hornets so he can definitely afford to sign brees. You been living under a rock?

If he doesn't sign the franchise tag before the dealine, he doesn't play at all this year and becomes a free agent next year..!! He can still negotiate a contract up until the deadline. After the deadline he's screwed if he doesn't do either..!

Not sure that is right chief
He can sign the tag up until preseason sometime skip training camp and get paid.

this was a comment intended to joke around with Doubledown by whodatfan referring to some stuff that got said on this board by some people that thought Benson could pay Brees out of his pocket.
