Just for the record, if you do some research and see how various actually calculate the "annual salary", the numbers can be a little deceiving. In the end, what really matters is the total guaranteed money. The Saints, from everything we know, are not lowballing Brees on that number.

For idiots like wildtigercat93

The 18-20 mil is salary so its not overblownThings get marked up when teams put in stupid bonuses that the player will never reach so that they can say the contract is worth a lot more than it actually is. The salary though is what they are paid for being on the roster. also teams like to back load contracts so they can dump a guy when his salary doesnt match production and they dont have to pay the full price of the contract

Exactly. Brees is basically being greedy. Brady took less money to keep the pats relevant. Brees may get his wish in the end. But in the end, his greed will fuk the saints.

Well if the media reported numbers for other QBs are skewed high, than the Brees number (23 million) is also skewed high

Believe me, Brees isnt asking for 10 more million a year than the highest paid guy, like you stated before. That would just be unreasonable

LINK

This is a much easier link than yours.

Brady got paid 26 million in the first year of his new contract. Thats why we keep saying it was frontloaded.

Yo, bro. Can you post a link that demonstrates how the numbers IN THIS SPECIFIC CASE are being calculated? I am telling you that the term "salary" is used very loosely in the NFL.

ETA: What really matters to the organization is how much counts against the salary cap this coming season. It is not as simple as you imply.

He was not paid 26.5 million in what is commonly referred to as "salary" and which counted against the cap.

Meachem is more of a deep threat then a possesion WR like Colston. I realize that the offense didn't miss much of a beat when Colston was out; but its not like he has missed a huge bulk of games other than in the 2008 season.

Meachem is a deep threat, but he's younger than henderson and were looking at Moore, Henderson, Arrington, Morgan, and Roby.

Meachem wouldn't really serve as Colston's replacement, but just to keep some sort of talent and depth at receiver

Nope, bonuses get prorated against the cap, unless your player is traded or cut, then it all comes due that year if I'm not mistaken.

The point I'm making is that the Saints are not being cheap or unreasonable by not caving into a demand of $23mm . . . most of which, because of the proposed structure (according to sources) would count against the cap. If those reports are true, the Saints are fricked, certainly next year, if the agree to it.

The reports I've heard is he wants to be paid Tom Brady/Peyton Money. If he honestly wants to be paid 5 million a year more than the next highest, yes he's out of his mind.

That's the impression that's out there. It's probably exaggerated, BUT I think the reality is that the number does frick eat up too much cap for the Saints.

there's so much crap on this board I can hardly stand to post. At least this is one thread besides another bounty one.

The numbers I saw reported was he was asking for $23mil and they were offering $18mil. A compromise at $20mil to be the highest paid ever should be enough. If he's hard balling on $23mil then Loomis had no choice but to franchise.

Brees is the savior of the franchise but he still is not the franchise. After he's gone I'll stil be a Saints fan. You cannot wreck the team as in "pay him whatever he wants".

The team will leak it if he is hard lining. The idea that he won't settle for $19-20mil would tarnish his savior image. As goody goody as he has been able to keep his reputation. I don't think he'll want that. That won't help his image at all.

Downside is that he reportedly won't sign a tag and hold out before doing so. If it means losing over a $million per game to do so more power to him. Now that it is in place there is no reason to expedite negotiations until camp starts in August- for either side.

I feel this way, too.

I find it easier to blame Condon.
In my fantasy, Brees is totally unaware of Condon's holding out.
And when he finds out, oh boy, look out.
