maybe we could sign Dawkins and Shepherd and draft a LT and most of our problems would be solved if Porter comes back 100%

Better to be realistic now and not get our hopes up.

a new defensive coordinator might help as much or more than any players. Romeo Crennel was a great DC that will probably need a new job.

All defense again personnel wise...
We're stuck with what we have on the D line investment/capwise.
A real LB in place of Shanle would be an acceptable LB crew.
Porter looked legit before going out. McK might be done at 34 depending on what a kneecap out means. A free agent bust the bank shutdown corner is still needed. (Chris Gamble?)
FS could be a real 1st rd pick depending on where it is. If continuing play like today it could be more like a top 1-2 CB instead of S.

A FS would help out the CBs a lot. I really think we are OK at CB, Porter and Gay can be reasonably good starting CBs, even if McKenzie doesn't come back. Not so sure about our nickel situation, though.

Biggest problem is pass rush, and we are screwed there with Grant and Smith's contracts. Of course a DC that blitzes more than once a game could help that.

we don't have the money to make big offseason moves...we are a middle of the pack team, always have been , always will be. Even our #1 draft picks turn out to be ineffective.

The LTs in the draft this year are awesome. My draft list would read:

T. Mays - Safety
M. Oher - LT
A. Smith - LT
W. Moore - Safety
C. Black - LT
D. Pegues - FS
E. Monroe - LT
A. Curry - OLB
B. Cushing - OLB
A. Pegues - Safety
V. Davis - CB
M. Jenkins - CB
V. Harris - CB
G. Hardy - DE

Free Agent List:
Jordan Gross (very good LT and steal him away from divison foe.)
John Runyan (OT)
Tra Thomas (OT)
Karlos Dansby (LBer)
Channing Crowder (LBer)
T.J. Houshmandzadeh (WR)
Cedrick Wilson (WR)

Of course, priority #1 has to be:
RESIGN VILMA

#2, Trade Grant for a second or third round pick and get a C.J. Spiller, Nic Harris, Fili Moala or Phil Loadholt.

I'd move him down a bit. He's a great athlete and good in run support, but his ball and coverage skills aren't worth an upper first round pick.

A. Curry - OLB
B. Cushing - OLB

I personally like Curry a lot more than I do Cushing.

Cushing is a beast at injecting roids and over-running plays.

John Runyan (OT)

Just noting that he's 34. He won't be in the game for long. I'd rather get a young franchise LT to shore up the left for years to come. Same for Tra Thomas.

If we could get a second for Grant I'd be ecstatic, but who would want that contract. Especially if he might be suspended to begin next season.

no way this happens. no one will want to pick up that contract and i can't even see someone giving a 5th round pick for him. no to mention him possibly being suspended next year.

ETA: LSUtigahs28 you beat me to it.

Outside LBER'S,CB'S, Safties, and OT are our biggest needs.
I beleive the LBER'S and CB's will be targeted and addressed in free agency. The needed Safties help will come via draft.

We will have to try and trade down in the draft to accumalte as many pics as possible to address all of our team needs. this depends on how the season plays out and how high in the first round the Saints are actually picking in April 2009.

CB could be dealt with in the third, unless we know Mike McKenzie is gone for good. McKenzie, Porter, Gay is a pretty solid top 3 we just need some depth because Porter, Gay, David is a lot worse and if anyone else goes down it gets worse.

Is Usama Young not good enough? Does he have the potential to become a starter for the Saints?

I find it hard to believe that no one is mentioning coaches. We need to start with defensive coordinator.

I think we need to address our safety issue in FA, and address our CB issue by getting some flipping pass rush. Despite our opinion of the O-line, we still manage to put up in the 20's most games. The defense is givng up 30 points though.

We could always fire Payton and hire Spagnuolo.

Usama Young still has plenty of time to develop, but there is no way we can rely on him after what he's shown so far.

Getting a pass rush is going to be a pain because we seem to love giving huge contracts to any DE that even looks like they belong on a NFL field. At which point they all get fat.
