damn... this shite is getting messy

Ok so now we probably know the main thing holding all of this up. I dont think it is as messy as some people think. We have heard him say he is frustrated but who wouldnt be. I dont think he has any hard feelings against the organization. Brees knows this is a buisness and that the Saints need to do whats best for their future.

"Squeezing money out of tax payers" sure is an interesting way of interpreting what has actually been granted to the Hornets. If you make $100 and the government previously would have taken $30...but then decides to take $20 instead...are you at that point "squeezing" that $10 out of tax payers??? Furthermore, the situation with Drew has far more to do with Loomis than it does Benson. Benson just wrote a check for $338MM to buy another sports franchise...the man could fart the $3-5MM per year which is supposedly holding up Drew's contract. This is a pissing contest between Tom Condon and Mickey Loomis. Drew is playing his role as the disappointed and offended player, and in the end, he'll be slinging touchdowns in the 'Benz once again.

So who makes up the 10 million missing out of the state budget? The tax payers do either us or the poor college students that are getting their tuitions raised because of budget cuts. The state is in no position to give this kind of money away. Benson has tons of money and doesnt need another 37 million.
I heard an NFL analyst say the other day that the Saints would take less of a cap hit by giving drew what he wants than by franchising him. he also said if both sides would just sit down and talk this out it could be done in a few hours.

It would be a smaller cap hit this season, but contracts are generally cheapest at the beginning and players get paid more later. We could easily give him the money this season, but as it progresses Brees would eat up a a lot of the cap space in future years.

It is all this salary negotiating crap that makes me hate the NFL and tend more to the college side of sports. Crap get this stuff over and sign the man.

From all accounts, Drew wants up front money, so this is not true. Most NFL contracts are written with the idea of sounding larger than they are by backloading the money. When they are cut, they do not get paid non-guaranteed money.

It's well known he was at least offered 18 mil per year (at the onset of negotiations)

People need to recognize that Brees, while a great person and a tremendous asset to New Orleans, is absolutely playing hardball in these negotiations. When he says he is frustrated and hurt, he's saying it for leverage.

With that in mind, it should not be a surprise, and certainly shouldn't be be viewed as a negative that the Saints are doing the same. Management of the Salary Cap is basically the difference between the winners and losers in the NFL. The Saints need to get a deal that makes sense for the franchise moving forward.

I noticed you dodged my question...regardless this is a sports board not an economics/politics board, so I'll keep it brief:

The state does not need to "make up" the difference. There is no fixed dollar amount which the state is entitled to each year. What there is, is a budget...If there are insufficient funds for whatever bullshite the state wants to spend our money on, there are dozens of ways to raise that cash without raising taxes. Bonds are a good example (go look it up, since I'm sure you have no clue what they are). If the budget isn't balanced, then you can blame the elected officials for their wasteful spending, not Tom Benson who probably contributed more tax revenue to the state last year than you or I will in our entire lifetime. Anyway, it's completely irrelevant. Benson keeping the hornets here will generate way more tax revenue than the $3.7MM per year the state is allowing him, just not directly out of his pockets. Some people call this an "investment"... Of course I realize I'm probably trying to explain all of this to a dyed in the wool "rich people don't pay their fair share" Obama supporter, so it's a circle jerk anyway.

Back to sports: Drew will sign, touchdowns will rain from the heavens in the 'Benz, and all of this drama will be forgotten, just like the drama of the CBA crap was forgotten last year.

Benson now looks like a hypocrite squeezing money out of the tax payers while not wanting to pay Drew his just salary.

Look on the left side of the screen, and between Music Board and Money Talk is the board you want to put this on.

Why wouldn't the Saints be willing to pay him 20 million a year?

because there's no fricking money left to sign anybody else! That's why there is so much parity in this league. You can only afford 1 great player and the rest are role players. While Drew was making 10mil free agents were still obtainable. Now that the whole team thinks there "great", all want to be paid like it...ala Nicks.

If you can only afford 1 great player it might as well be a qb named Drew Brees right?

Welcome to the problem had by every single good team in sports. Pat Riley put it perfectly with the "Disease of Me". If you ever get a chance to look up his full statements on the issue, you should its a good read, but I'll steal a summary and post it here.

LINK

quote:

Chronic feelings of under appreciation – focus on oneself

Paranoia over being cheated out of one’s rightful share

Leadership vacuum resulting from formation of cliques and rivalries

Feelings of frustration even when the team performs successfully

Personal effort increased solely to outshine one’s teammate

Resentment of the competence and success of another

Players start thinking they are more than bit players that fit the system (for example, Tully Banta-Cain gets 10 sacks one year, leaves system, sucks, comes back, is alright). The person I think will be really affected by this is Mark Anderson. He is not a full time DE, and Buffalo paid him like one.

Thats why its hard to keep dynasties in the NFL, and what makes the Steelers, Patriots, Ravens, and Eagles past ten-fifteen years so amazing.

The problem is that Brees has positioned himself as "better" than Manning as far as grasping the needs of the franchise, the community, etc.

Nobody busted Manning's chops b/c the dude is a straight up whore. He literally licked oreo frosting on national TV like a gay porn star licking jizz off the floor for a few extra $$$.

Now Brees is playing hardball even when he has a contract paying him more than either Manning or Brady sitting on his agent's desk this minute. It's disingenuous to the image he's projected with his book, etc.
