I like this kid as a prospect, but I hate using picks at this point in the draft on guys who won't play for several years. There's a bunch of good players still available that could have helped us in 2023.

Didnt Ian Book say the same thing??!! Lol. He admires Brees and all this BS. Brees loved Book at Notre Dame too. Lets not get hyped over a kid who may not make the active roster.

From Luke Johnson:

quote:

I remember asking Jeff Ireland about how the team evals QBs.

“I sat down with Drew before he left and said, ‘I gotta know this, what makes you exceptional?’” Ireland recalled. “He said, ‘Processing speed, accuracy, getting the ball out.’”

Haener had the second highest S2 score in this draft class

He’s assuredly not going to be on the active roster. So what.

Book was an awful pick. The guy clearly could not throw with anticipation. Haener is much more capable of playing in the NFL.

Anthony Richardson had a 79. I dont know how much this test factors into play on the field.

I know it’s cliche but his throwing motion really does look like Brees

Based on watching game tape from Fresno State??? Thats a bold statement to make for a lower round QB. Be a little realistic.

Team captain with below-average size and arm talent, but above-average football IQ. Haener plays with a pre-snap plan and does a nice job of getting the ball out quickly against the blitz. He senses edge pressure and slides to find a new location to throw from. He doesn’t have the drive velocity to successfully window shop and might require a timing-based scheme or spread attack where he can make quick throws in rhythm. Haener’s lack of traits, coupled with limited mobility outside the pocket, create a challenging road to NFL success.

Saints draft QB Jake Haener

ya thats a wasted pick, drew brees was a yunicorn

few if any short QBs succeed for good reason, you have to be able to see over the line to find your open guys.

brees couldnt, but he did slide left or right where holes were open to see down field. we dont have the type of line drew had so there wont be any open holes for him to look through even if he is a good QB.

this pick makes zero sense, its like they just threw a dart at the available QB board rather then put any thought into it. guys like him need specific o-line situations that cater specifically to opening up clear lines of sight, and we dont have that kind of o-line here any more.

Now that is interesting.

I really think they needed to address DB but young QB is a need in the middle rounds too. Hmmm.

Saints.

Carr's deal could possibly be done after 2 years. To me this is the Saints finally learning from the past.

Take a qb every other year if you don't have a young entrenched starter.

Based on scouts all seeing the same thing. You're looking for a capable backup in round 4. Haener fits the bill as a prospect.

Book was always late on throws. Everyone thought the Saints were nuts for taking him when they did. That's not the case with this guy.

With all the uncertainty at qb last season and even now (again Carr had a really bad season last year), they had to take a shot so I wouldn’t say its wasted. It’s basically all educated gambles at this point.
