Anxious to see what we have up. If anything at least we have a solid backup for 2018. I don’t really see this as a long term option. He won’t sign with us again unless Brees retires
We have a good team with a LOT of youth on it. Short of signing with the Patriots, this is probably the best case scenario for a young QB like Bridgewater.
I pretty much guarantee the rest of the NFC South's front offices said "aw shite" when this went through.

Brees wins another Super Bowl this year and retires.
Bridgewater strengthens his knee for a year and learns Sean’s system.
Teddy B has 10 solid years as Saints QB.
Easy Peasey!

Drew has thrown a ton of picks in camp. He looked bad in the dress rehearsal. Payton maybe thinking the sun is setting.

I think it’s a great move. This takes the pressure off the Saints to have to invest a 1st rounder on a future QB (possibly multiple 1st’s if they draft a bust). I refuse to believe the Saints made this move for a 1 year rental. They have to think they can sign Bridgewater long term. As for Brees, I believe this move signals that he has either told the Saints that he is done after 2019 come what may, or the Saints believe that is the case. Sad, but I can’t blame him. This also tells me Payton is prepared to coach the Saints past the Drew Brees era, more great news. I’m excited about the move and the future of the Saints!

Man, I forgot how good Bridgewater was before he got injured. He has a great feel for the pocket, throws with great anticipation and he's really accurate. In those highlights, if you blurred out his body and put everybody on offense in a Saints uniform, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him and Drew Brees

I like the move, He is better than anything we have behind Drew right now and he has potential that can be coached up by CSP.

When I first saw this I was thinking why the frick would we do this? Why trade a third (saw the news after the compensation was announced) for a QB with a year left on his deal?
Then as I processed it more I realized what this really was. This was a move to try and secure a franchise QB for when Brees leaves in a year or two.
We couldn't wait until FA next year to make a run at him because he was going to be traded to some team this year (and very likely extended or franchised before FA). The thought initially popped in my head of "why not wait" until I thought about it.
So now he is in house and can learn Payton's system this year (and next if Brees stays one more year even after winning the SB), and pick up habits from how Brees prepares (whether Brees mentors him or not, but I think Brees realizes how close his end is and wouldn't have the same stance he had 5 years ago and would help out) and pick his brain.
So then the issue is compensation. I initially scoffed at it being a third, but then thought, "A third for a potential franchise QB? Most teams need to spend a first or high second for that."
The flipside though is that he needs to get paid the big bucks now instead of 4 cheap years and a fifth kind of cheap year. So while we didn't have to trade up into the top 5, paying an exorbitant ransom to do so, we also don't get the benefit of a super cheap option to build the team around.
The other flipside to that is when drafting a rookie you have no idea if they'll pan out, meanwhile you've seen what Teddy can do and he can play at a high level (not a Brees/Brady/Rodgers level, but still pretty good).
So there are positives and negatives with going this route, but we've been down this road before so we should be better prepared to navigate it.
And it's not like we had a first next year to have the option of drafting and grooming Brees' successor (if he didn't retire after winning the SB; otherwise there'd be no grooming and more of an "oh shite we need a QB NOW!"), or that it'd be a high first anyway (not to mention this is supposedly one of the worst QB classes in a while).
So our options were limited and this is probably the best road we had to take to secure the future.
But to do that, we need to secure Teddy to a long term deal. What will that look like? How will it work if Brees stays another year? I racked my brain on it and thought of many ways (cheaper year next year with incentives if he starts, and the big bucks following that; franchise and eventually extend but that would be hard if Brees stays; backload the frick out of it, etc.), but in the end realized it doesn't matter because one way or another we'll find a way to make it work, because we definitely did not make this trade for a one year rental.

I'll hold off on questioning this coaches decision to sign a QB. I remember thinking it was a mistake to sign Brees coming off of a major injury to the shoulder on his throwing arm.
But, he turned out ok.
I'll assume they did their homework this time too.

Early career trajectory for Brees and Bridgewater is interestingly similar.

How about comparing Year 2 for both players. Both were 23. Brees went 8-8 with 17 TDs, 16 INTs. Bridgewater went 11-5 with 14 TDs, 9 INTs. Basically the same yardage. Brees threw for 61 percent, Teddy at 65 percent. Brees got benched the next year, Teddy got hurt

.@ProFootballTalk just said that the Dolphins were also in on Teddy Bridgewater, which is part of the reason the Saints had to give up a 3rd round pick to get him.

Bridgewater's average QB rating for the two seasons at the Vikings was 86.95.
Brees' average QB rating at San Diego for five seasons was 86.64.
Under Payton for 12 years for Brees average QB rating was 99.79.
Food for thought.

Another fun fact.
Norv Turner was Drew Brees' first year offensive coordinator in SD in 2001. Turner was Bridgewater's first and second year offensive coordinator at the Vikings in 2014 and 2015.

If Bridgewater doesn't have "Brees comeback" written ally over it, then I don't know what does. Bree will play 2-3 more years and then Bridgewater will be the guy

Do you see any irony that Teddy Bridgewater's initials are the same as our beloved former owner Tom Benson?
