In 15 seasons of play, he threw for more TDs than INTs twice, 1980 23/20, and 1978 17/16.
For his career he had a 125/173 TD to INT ratio.
He seemed to not be able to throw the ball away instead of taking sacks. And when he would, it often ended up in the wrong hands.
I remember my Uncle Bill watching Saints games, yelling, "THROW THE BALL, ARCHIE!!!" many times each game. He was a tanker in Korea, so he often had a LOT more colorful things to say to the TV while watching the Saints in those days...

Sounds like Archie had a shitty agent.

Archie's years with the Saints were the most colossal waste of talent you will ever see. I agree he would have been a HOFer with some other team.

There was no free agency back then, so players didn't have much leverage.

Archie Manning
Here's my advice for you. If you are too young to remember Archie Manning's playing days, then, don't feel TOO badly about what you missed.
The best that the Saints did during his time was 8-8. Archie Manning is not even MY favorite "Old School Saints QB", because that would be Billy Kilmer. Archie Manning, IF he was at all better than Billy Kilmer, was NOT that much better than Kilmer.
Would Archie have been great on another team? Perhaps. BUT, we will never know for sure. The answer to that question is unknowable.
Even during Archie's prime with the Saints, there were many fans who did not think he was a smart QB that could read defenses and pick them apart.
My own opinion is that Archie was a fine QB for the Saints who had a LOT of heart, guts, class and all of the great character qualities that you look for in a Pro. He was great for the Saints during his time.
But that was a LONG time ago. It is time to move on and place Archie Manning in the Saints History Book. Archie Manning and the New Orleans Saints of 2010 have NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER. Nothing. Archie is a Colt now. Archie is a Giant now. Archie Manning and the Saints are ancient history. Archie Manning is now as much a New Orleans Saint as is Gary Cuozzo or Ken Stabler.
Are Gary Cuozzo and Ken Stabler immediately associated with the Saints when thier names are mentioned? No. And neither should Archie Manning's name be so associated. All three men are now alike in that they are former Saint quarterbacks who no longer associate themselves with the franchise.
PS None of my post should be interpreted such that any reader would conclude that I was alive during any of the times that I discuss. I am a Saints history buff, and, I know some things from reading Saints history. That's all.

Archie is probably the most overrated player ever. He was completely average. Nothing special what so ever. Both his sons are better than he ever was.
How would you know? You weren't even born when he signed with the Saints.

You forgot to mention Edd Hargett.

Archie Manning was not "completely overrated."
It is TRUE that both of his sons are better QBs but that's because Peyton and Eli both had about one thousand percent more QB coaching than did Archie.
There is no comparison between the QB coaching that a high schooler in 1960 would get compared to what kind of QB coaching a high school player can get in 2010. Same for college QB coaching.

Plus, he spelled his name with two "d's" which is WAY cool!

I agree! It kind of gets off with me the way the media is spinning this. Archie and Peyton being New Orleans favorite son. I would say Drew Brees is the favorite son of NO now!!!

My favorite Archie highlight is when LSU kicked his and ole pisses arse on halloween night.

This is beyond dispute. Let it be written in stone.

Yes. This is the Age of Drew.
Archie belongs in the past. He is Ancient History.
Forget Archie Manning. He is a Colt. He is a Giant. He has NOT been a Saint for many years now.
Bobby Hebert has proven himself to be MUCH more of a Saint than Archie Manning.

Manning in his career threw for 23,911 yards -- 2011 for 3642 attempts and had a 55.2 completion %. His career QB rating was 67.1, which is sort of low. Much of his low rating was caused by his TD to INT ratio which was 125 TDs/173 INTs.
As most have commented, I also remember Manning running for his life on a lot of plays and he was pretty elusive for those days. That adds up to a lot of late throws on the run -- that (a la Brett Farve) were intercepted.
Not only did he have a crappy O line, Manning never had much of a receiving corps either. Never had an all-pro (or close to it) receiver as I can remember.
Hear are some other comparable QBs career QB ratings from back then just for fun.
Bradshaw 70.9
Delhomme 59.4
Bert Jones 78.2
John Hadl (Chargers) 67.4
Jim Hart (Cards) 66.6
Ron Jaworski 72.8
Joe Namath 65.5
Jim Plunkett 67.5
Norm Sneed 65.5
Lynn Dickey 70.9

I have nothing bad to say about Archie Manning.
He belongs to the Saints past. He is no longer a fan of the New Orleans Saints.
If you're looking for a former Saint who is STILL a Saint, look no further than Bobby Hebert.
Archie Manning is a country boy from Mississippi.
Bobby Hebert is a Native Son of Louisiana, and, so am I.

He did. The Saints traded him away. That's not Archie's fault.
