As opposed to the PA announcers that call the plays as they're happening?
Yes - that's clearly what the intent of my post was
He lags too far behind for my tastes- calling the play long after it occurs at times. To each his own. But if you like his timing, his voice, and his overall job performance that's your prerogative.
People either love him, hate him, or are lukewarm towards him. Nothing more to see here. We can all agree there are mixed feelings in this regard.

would you rather some black MC from a radio station trying to hype the crowd up?
Where the frick did that come from?

the people that hate him are probably bandwagon fans anyway. For people that have been Saints fans for a long time, he is the first thing we have ever heard at a sporting event.
So if I was a fan when John Gilliam returned the first kickoff I'm a bandwagon fan.

99% of the people in the dome love the guy, for good reason.
I'm pretty sure that percentage is waaaaayyyyy off. They do pretty much tolerate him, however.

I have been a season ticket holder for years and I have always hated this dude. he will say Brees passing complete to Moore and it sounds like Brees pass incomplete to Moore. It is so aggravating. The previous post of him talking out of his nose is dead on correct. It is awful.

I don't think he's good either brah. Not bad enough to ruin a game, but not good.

well, what does he do that is bad? You're just being a contrarian if you cant even say what pisses you off so much about him.
ever been to an away game and heard other people's PA announcers?

no, you prob are a new age 2006- present fan. Those are the only people Ive heard say they dont like him. They have no sense of his place in Saints history.

Im pretty sure its not. Like i said, anyone that has been a fan for awhile appreciates what he brings to the game, and see him as a legend. They hardly "tolerate" him.
He is all we know, and he does a great job. Like I said, tell me what he does that is so bad?
he could be like the female PA announcer in San Fran or the jig that tries and hypes the crowd in ATL. Some people really have no clue. You have nothing to judge him on.

Open your eyes when you're at game, they may help clear up some confusion.

He doesn't bother me, but he really isn't much more than mediocre at what he does.
when you can subtly say something like "first down Saints" and the crowd goes nuts, then id say he has an impact on the fan base.
its a far cry from what some PA announcers have to do to get their fans to cheer.
shite, that isnt even a PA announcers job. Romig can get the fans in the game without calling attention to himself or to the team. he is a pro's pro, and good at his job. He hardly has held this job for so long by being well connected.

the funny thing is, the OP is obviously not a fan of the Saints or a huge bandwagon douche. If you are gonna call the wiley ole superdome vet out, at least know his fricking name. this whole thread is fail
i am the OP and don't ever question my love of the Saints. i have been a fan through many more lean years than good ones. my first memories of football is watching the saints in the mid 80's. hebert is my favorite saint and the reason i wore number 3 in high school, so i do know what i'm talking about. i know the pa guys name, have for years, but who cares what his name is. as badas he is at the game, i hate hearing him on tv more.
by the way, a 4 page thread does not = fail... douche

So if they are meager, what's to hate about him?
I have written nothing hateful.

Not much to it, nothing to call "awful."
I merely indicated it was nothing to call legendary as some have written.

It really is just the fact that his voice is recognized as the voice of the Dome that he's appreciated.
After almost 4 decades how would it not be recognized.

yes it is his tone and not the first down, that excites the fans. Without his pointing that out we wouldn't know what happened.

WTF?

Went to high school with his grand-daughter...they are great people.
As far as his work in the Dome, it wouldn't feel like a Saints game without him.

Dude I had season tickets before and after Katrina. I watched the Gilliam return. Yes, I'm an old fart (who's immature enough to be on this stupid message board).
As someone pointed out, it took several years to understand the difference between Jerry calling a pass incomplete and "passing complete".
And the tone of his voice is annoying. And he gets just a little bit confused at times.
Hey, in the end, I don't actually hate the guy, and I know that some fans love him. But I wouldn't mind a PA guy with a better voice and who makes clearer calls.
