re: Why I believe we got a steal in Chase Thomas.

1) He can jog on the field at times when he thinks he's out of the play, and maybe he is, but you can never be certain. That's correctable though.
I watched all of his complete games they had on YouTube and definitely noticed this. One game (can't remember which one), the QB threw it to the outside WR in the flats right off the snap, the Cb had him wrapped up, Thomas was about 15 yards away just watching, and the WR broke the tackle and scored a TD.
I'm excited to get this guy as a UDFA, but it's easy to see why he didn't go in the late 2nd-4th he was projected. 5th would have been a good spot for him, but at that point nothings a sure thing as teams start taking players no one expected (Rufus in the 6th), causing others to fall.
He'd have games where he might have a sack or two, and maybe a couple TFLs, but besides those plays he would be invisible (getting flushed out easily by Olinemen vs the run, no QB hurries). But like I said, I am excited to see what he brings, and do think he makes the team.

he was near the top of all the best of the UDFA lists
Many guys get calls and negotiate with teams from the mid rounds as to where they might go if not drafted. The case could have been that the Saints knew he was theirs from the 4th or 5th Rd (if not drafted), hence, no need to draft the guy. Pretty ideal situation to choose for him- new 3-4 scheme with no incumbent starters, not even anyone who has ever been a 3-4 starting LB, and for a solid contending franchise. Gotta be disappointed not being drafted but it ends up much better for him than being added to a team stacked with LBs or having to play in the likes of Jacksonville, etc.
Then someone like Rufus that surely was graded as an UDFA... They possibly could have not had any contact or assurance from him- or even knew he would have signed with another team as a UDFA. So they draft him even though his "grade" isn't 6th Rd.
Thomas is kinda similar to Fujita to me, just a tad smaller

I was not impressed with his film.

He won't make the team
I think he'll have trouble too. Maybe practice squad. Special teams at most

If he is even half that good, I'm stoked.

Pretty solid analysis. I'm excited to see what we'll get from him.

Not trying to troll but watching that footage of him vs. ND. He looked very slow?

I didn't see impressive footage in the video. Sorry

It's not a highlight reel. He's not going to make a play or do the right thing every time. However, he get's consistent pressure. Me likey.

Outside. He occasionally blitzes up the middle. He moves around a lot.

His speed is a concern.
The athletic competition is only gonna be worse at this level.

I'm just blown away that we got him without using a draft pic.

be more blown away that his old coach Jim Harbaugh and DC Vic Fangio had like 20 picks w/ SF and they never drafted him.

Thomas is absolutely gonna make this squad IMO. He disengages as well as any LB on our team at the moment.
My on critique with him would be a lack of versatile passrushing moves. His swim move is very, VERY good (especially at the college level), but he will need to develop a rip to go along with it if he wants to be successful in the NFL. With his short arms, if he tries going with a swim move on an inside twist you're going to see an OL get under him and shoot him to the moon.
This is something most college passrushers have to learn anyways so no big deal. They're all good enough to get away with one move in college so they rarely come in which much diversity.
He'll be a solid body on this roster.

Well they did draft another pass rusher in the 2nd round, and it was a position they're already deep at.

They drafted one in the 6th too
