why is Jerry Jones bad?

I've actually heard recently that Darth Sidious (Tom Benson) has given his power over to this grand daughter.
Maybe that's why that 2025 deal went through. Benson would never have done that.

Dunno... I would take 3 superbowls over 2 playoff wins

I work part time at the Dome/Arena. I can tell you who is the biggest as@#$le I've delt with. Daniel Synder, what a douchebag!!! Second, the Glaser Brothers (bucs). If your not a millionaire, you are a peasent.
Coolest, Mr. Richardson from the Panthers and Jim Ursay (Colts). I remember the Sunday night game a couple of years ago when Payton killed us by throwing 5 or 6 touchdown passes, he actually apoligized to me.
Al Davis is really weird. You look at his eyes and say to yourself, damm is he alive.

Tom Benson = Top 10 small market owner in the history of major league professional sports.
(oops, i did it again)
I'm serious about this one - it's not just a "bored on a tuesday afternoon" shite-stirring opinion. I will fight you tooth and nail.
Tom Benson is the best owner a New Orleans based team could hope for. He has been batting 1.000 since 2006. Not one slip-up on his part.
He puts his money where his mouth is, he doesn't meddle like an Al Davis or a George Shinn, he has top-notch coaching and scouting departments, he has fully embraced the viability of the Superdome over the next 30 years, he fully supports New Orleans and attracting ArenaBowls (LOL!) and Super Bowls to our city.
Can somebody please name the last above-average player that the Saints didn't re-sign for monetary reasons a'la Bobby Hebert?
And even Bobby Hebert, Morten Andersen, LaRoi Glover were all the decisions of our GM's, not Benson saying "I cant pay that".

I know I am stating the obvious but definetley the Cryptkeeper who owns the Raiders. How is Al Davis not dead? What deal did he make with the devil? Dude looks like something straight out of a Guy Ritchie gangster movie.

since about 2000 i dont see how anyone can complain about Benson.
-he has spent money on players
-our ticket prices are the cheapest in the league
-he seems to be committed to keeping the Saints here long term now
-has consistently made changes with the coaching staff and front office to try and get the team to win now
I agree here. It seems like he's actually tried to put a quality product on the field for the last 5-10 years. Prior to that, he was easily one of the worst. Guess he realized being a sucky owner and patronizing your fans doesn't make you a lot of money.

I agree that Rita is the reason for turn around lately. I think Benson has made some strange moves in the front office. I have to agree that he hasn't lost anyone due to not paying.
His stunt where he told the league he was afraid for his life that shows what a nut bag he is.

Al Davis a bad owner? The man may be the most outspoken proponent for his team. "Commitment to Excellence"
The superbowl rings say he is one of the best owners.
he WAS a great owner. We are talking about the present though. They are embarrassing themselves

Besides al Davis (I think he's easily the worst) where are you ranking tom benson?
Davis isn't the worst owner in the NFL. In fact, he's nowhere near the worst.
Mike Brown is easily the worst owner in the NFL.
Benson, IMO, is a middle of the pack owner.

I think Brown is 31 and W.C. Ford is 32. At least Brown got the team turned around for a few years before it imploded with gangsta's. If not for the last 3-4 years, I'd say Bidwell as well, but they've made a huge turn around.
IMO:
29. Bidwell/York (Cardinals/49ers) [Like I said, Bidwell's done great lately, but sucked so bad in the 90's he gets an honarable mention]
30. Benson (Saints) [Not Rita, she's done a good job lately]
31. Brown (Bengals)
32. William Clay Ford (Lions)

what are your "qualifications" for worse owner?
Posted on 5/14/09 at 10:50 am to Chad504boy
I would say #1 would be the teams suckage level. Lions are worst followed by the bungals and raiders. The lions did go 10-6 recently and the bengals were not that bad several years ago either. Saints and Benson are just above the middle of the pack on the better half of the league.

I'll bite.
Tom Benson bought the team in 1985. You can not give Benson the bad rap for the Saints reputation prior to that. Tom Benson bought the team and kept them in New Orleans and kept them from moving to places like Jacksonville.
He was immediately a popular owner and hired Jim Finks and Jim Mora. The team played great and had some great years. Unfortunately, they always had Joe Montana or Steve Young in the division along with some other good teams. Either way, they had a hell of a ride.
Jim Finks died, Jim Mora fell apart. Change was needed.
He went out and tried to make a splash and hired Mike Ditka. Hell, i was a believer at first. The effort was there by Benson, you can't deny that. They went for it with Ricky Williams. Didn't hold any punches. Didn't work out, Benson did what was necessary and changed the regime.
Since then, we had the Haslett era(keep in mind won coach of the year) and now the Sean Payton era (keep in mind won coach of the year).
He had the little fiasco about San Antonio during Katrina times but for arguments sake, he's a business man and is in charge of a near billion dollar company. He's made good deals with the state and appears to be happy here now. Make no mistake about it, if Benson wanted to leave, he could probably be in Los Angeles right now or could have sold his team any time he wanted. We've had some ups and downs but people concrete too much on the bad IMO.
We've had 24 seasons under Benson:
All 6 of our playoff seasons have come under Benson. That's basically 25% of the seasons, we've made the playoffs. Not great but not terrible either for a small market team who had the worse franchise ever for a while.
8 of the 24 seasons, we've had a ABOVE .500 record. 1/3 of the seasons, we were a winning ball club.
5 seasons we were 8-8. So that's 13 of the 24 seasons we were .500 or better.
11 seasons we had losing records, 5 of which were 7-9 which at least means we were close even though some years were let down.
4 head coaches total during 24 seasons shows me stability and loyalty IMO.
Certainly not a case for worst owner IMO.

I want to make one more point for whatever it is worth.
Lets say we gave Benson a pass for every year that he made a coaching change after. Not too unfair IMO when a team/regime falls apart and benson tries to fix the problem after. That takes out 3 seasons from when the Mora team fell apart, the Ditka team fell apart and then the Haslett era fell apart. That's 3 3-13 seasons taken out.
With that in mind, the saints record the remaining seasons is 175-161. Not too shabby IMO.

the owner that Benson bought the team from was far worse than him.

Also, Mora was coach of the year. 3 of the 4 coaches that Benson has employed was an NFL Coach of the year.

Chad, that's some nice work and a great post.
Who'd a thunk that the Saints have been .500 or better in over half of the seasons since Benson bought the team?
I think we had only done that 1 or 2 times prior to his ownership.
Let's also not forget Benson outright SWALLOWING the bad contracts of Ditka, Kuharich, Haslett, Mueller, etc.
I remember the maddest I've ever been at Benson (excluding Katrina) was when he fired Randy Mueller out of the blue. Kind of shady, and kind of similar to how he just shut down the VooDoo.
Turns out he was correct in both of those moves. Mueller seems to be a flake who really never found another meaningful job, and the VooDoo move was a front-of-the-pack wise business decision that preceded the fall of the AFL.
Aside from Katrina, EVERY SINGLE THING that Benson has done has been A) Aggressive, B) Genuinely done with the intention of improving the Saints and C) Expensive.
He's a great owner and I wish that somebody more talented than I would document and chronicle his time as owner. We'll be fortunate if Rita really turns out to be as good an owner as Tom. I wonder how the death tax/transfer of power will effect the Benson's financial situation and their ability to fire coaches and take those hits, spend on big name free agents and coaches, etc.
