The ramp has to be longer, right?

I don't think there is much of an elevation change ramp as to open the bridge, it just swings out into the bayou. Looking at it on GE, there appears to be a very slight incline, but it's only 15 feet long.

Ok, that makes sense.

Their last words to each other must have been something like:

"Billy-Bob, are you sure we can do this?"

"No problem Bubba, I've seen it done on tv a thousand times. Now hold my beer"

Measured the gap on Google Earth

55.5 yards

That's assuming the portions of the bridge don't raise to create an angle, which they do. So assuming half of the western ramp portion to the far east spot on the eastern portion it is really closer to 58 yards... but I know, we are talking educated guesses and semantics here.

Guard arms are located almost at the beginning of the bridge railing so we know they had no more than 55 yards of space to accelerate according to google maps.

2 people died, yet I'm laughing. Is that wrong?

Of course not.

If I was kin to these baws and got the phone call that they died trying to jump a 150' gap between bridge ramps, I think I'd laugh too.

Since the names haven't been released, I'm going to put a guess their middle names have to be something like Ray, Wayne, DeWayne or Earl. These names always pop up when redneck Texans do crazy shite.

Looking at the pic above with it opened, they wouldn't have made it going 100 mph

Ignoring drag, they would have needed an exit velocity of ~50 mph to go 160 feet if the ramp was at a 45 degree angle. Not impossible, but they would have lost a ton of speed once they hit a 45 degree ramp, so they needed to be hauling arse to have a chance.

I think it's obvious they weren't.

We thank them for their sacrifice.

Wait. Does the very end of the road tilt up when the bridge is open to help keep you from driving off the end of it?

That was their ramp? That's fricking priceless.

Thought they arrested him last week in Florida for burning his wife's house down.
