The answer has to be 4 if using the 1/3 as 2 which would be 1/3 of 9-3

9-3=6
6/2 (1/3) 3

3+1 =4

My issue from hat thread is that i still was interpreting as the original way that OP wrote it I will always say that this one is ambiguous.

It does nothing for the man.

He is still the boards resident argumentative douchetwat who will cement his feet in any position and argue it to death with anyone who engages his fat arse.

No I mean that the updated version was to be interpreted the way OP originally had.

You know what you are, and as I've told you before, I feel so bad for your wife.

She could have done so much better.... Well, maybe not. She is just a nurse.

Yes, bevause of the way he posted it originally. I didn't make an assumption out of thin air the way he originally posted had no trick, the follow up did. It's really not that hard to follow.

How is this thread 18 pages?

Poorly written problem as there is no reason to change your operation signs unless you are trying to confuse the solver. The problem shows us that they are using ÷ to indicate division. So, using context of a poorly written problem, there is no reason to think the / isn't a numerator/denominator line. That would make the equation equal 1.

However, if you want to assume the writer decided to change what he wanted to use to show a division operation, then you say the answer is 9.

In actuality, as it is written in the subject line, the problem would be thrown out as it is left unclear as to how the writer is intending the / to be used.

ETA: The actual problem (that caused this to go viral) is written like this:

The answer to that is 1.

LNCHBOX is arguing that the answer is 9 in that one and that it isn't 9 in this one.

The proper way to write out what's shown in the image is "9-3÷(1/3)+1="

A fraction bar is a grouping tool, so everything within the fraction should be in parentheses, while a "/" is merely a symbol for division, not for grouping.

That's the problem, both this written out OP and the one from a few months ago incorrectly interpret the problem shown in the image.
