Because it’s a communication problem not a math problem. PEMDAS is used to help people communicate with computers. Engineers deal with real world problems. Stuff like this is for teachers and the Facebook crowd to pass the time.

Put this into that calculator: 9-3÷1÷3+1

That's not what it says though. If that was the way this were written the answer is clearly 9. As I said Every digit is separated with a space except 1/3, implying fraction. I know assumptions can't be made in math but if this was written with the 1/3 as a smaller font would you and everyone else assume fraction even though there's no parenthesis? (I wish I could format the text to show what I'm talking about)

Yes they try to ruin math by making it touchy feely bullshite. Fundamental math is great though because it eliminates pretense and delivers something true and fair.

That's why most women don't like math.

I think if it was written 1 over 3 then it's telling you it's a fraction- no assumptions

I know, but your calculator can't even solve that equation. I'm pointing out the flaws with cymath.

I don't mean
1
-
3

I mean where the numbers are written smaller to end up as the same height as a normal number like how we usually write number like 3.5 as whole number and fraction.

If it was intended to not be 1/3 then it should've been written as 9-(3/1)/3+1. Now it's completely unambiguous. There's something called multiplication through juxtaposition: if the numbers touch then they get multiplied together before others. But it's not a set rule so something like 3x/5y can have multiple meanings depending on whether the "rule" is followed or not. Parentheses makes the rule moot.

Many math books also taught that the ÷ meant divide everything to the left of the symbol by everything to the right of the symbol. I still argue that using an obelus and a slash, plus the spacing issue causes the problem to mean there's a fraction.

However, it's a stupid problem at any rate.

OT loves their monthly "solve this tricky math question".

You'd think after doing this 15 times people would remember the god damn PEMDAS rule.

It's 1. I'm an engineer.
-3 divided by 1/3 = - 9.
9-9 = 0
0+1= 1.

Not hard.
