That's the problem. R22 is being phased out. Technicians have to reclaim the stuff and then use the purified, recycled R22 to charge. Adds a lot to the cost of the work but not that much. I had a whole system replaced few months ago for $5500, outdoor unit and indoor unit with the gas furnace.

Rather than start a new thread.

Putting in an xv18 HVAC system

1 ton for upstairs
2 ton for the downstairs

Ball park pricing for new construction?

Foam your house and make that bad boy perform like a 21 SEER.

I did spray foam.

No price quotes?

I opted up for the variable speed too. I went way over budget on insulation/hvac.

Now I have buyer's remorse.

I just got a quote for 1k. Parts, R-22 and Labor.. So yea 3k sounds a bit high. 1 hour AC?

They put in a 410a coolant rated evaporator coils and pump R-22 through it. So you don't have to replace outside unit until that goes bad. Then you are all set for 410a. The 410a coils should handle r22 better since 410a is put through at a much higher psi.

I just paid 65 a pound to have my system charged.. The problem here is One Hour AC mainly.

Local guy out of Walker. I would rather not advertise here though.

I was with 1 hour for a year and got tired of them always trying to sell me crap. Their pricing with the 20% off for their stupid club was always way higher than anyone else. Plus I had a tech come out and try and tell me my unit wasn't working correctly because the coils were too big for the outside unit so I needed to buy a new system. When I called and spoke to his manager and told him he was full of shite and never to send him out again. They sent a second tech which determined that I only had a bad capacitor. But then they charged me like 300 to replace a 30 dollar capacitor that lasted a year. I replaced it myself last year in 10 minutes.

Metal or Flex ductwork? I am guessing at least 18k off the top of my head but there are too many unknowns.

Sometimes contractors give obscenely high rates if they don't want the job.

It is River City/ One Hour Air, their pricing is inanely high. They quote prices regardless of type of equipment with each major service step having a fixed price, from what I remember it is something like

Physically replace coil or compressor around $985.00

Pressure test system with nitrogen, vacuum and recharge. $985.00

Replace starter capacitor $210.00

I had to use them in a jam on my BR rent house, never again.

Parts are additional charge

Yeah, I'm pretty sure R-22 is obsolete. That refrigerant is worth more than gold if you can find it. Sounds like it's time for an update.

yep, I replaced my whole system (outside and inside unit and gas furnace) on a 3K system for $3,000 last year. So nice to have a 10 year warranty on the whole system.

If there is no leak in the outside unit then why not save a good bit of money and just change the coils out? R-22 in a R-410a coil is far less likely to leak since the copper will be much thicker since its built for something like 3x the pressure than the thin copper in R-22 coil systems.. When the outside unit dies then replace and go 410a.

R-22 in a R-410a coil

I did NOT know this could be done. That is part of my dad's hangup. He doesn't see the need to replace a perfectly good compressor when all that needs replacing is the evap coil. So the a/c company could put in a 410a coil and run R22 through it? Would it have the same performance as a coil designed for R22? Or better? (aside from the leaking).

They cannot manufacture R-22 coils anymore.. Everything should be 410a now. You wouldn't have the option to replace your coils at all if you couldn't run R-22 through coils designed for 410a. What you cannot do is run 410a through the outside unit designed for R-22. I believe they install a metering device for the conversion. Im not an expert in the matter though I just know from what I have learned talking to professionals and my own research. So I cannot say anything in performance over time.

I guess one thing to consider is that if your compressor was running undercharged for a long period of time its probably taken a beating from that. So just fixing the coils may still leave you with a compressor that is underperforming.

I just got mine done for $1,025. I called around for estimates and most wanted $1,400 to $1,500.
