It was mandatory for safety reasons at my old job, and now it's second nature. Why does this bother you?

Wait, when we're we talking about trucks? This isn't the mandatory birth control thread?

Its typically a safety thing. When you want to leave alot of times you might be in a hurry and/or distracted. By only having to go forward, you have a better chance of seeing all vehicles.

We back all of our company trucks in every chance we have. Gotta remember that you not only have to watch where you are going but where others are as well.

Are you of the belief that it is easier?

It is abundantly clear you don't understand how a long wheel based vehicle steers.
It's much easier to park straight in a spot that is 90% to the lot.
Rear steering vehicles are more maneuverable.

I drove one for years. It is in no way easier or faster.

Whole lot of ignorance in this post. Congrats on being a terrible driver. It's much easier to get a long vehicle into a spot backing in compared to pulling in. Also makes getting out easier. And that's not an opinion. It's a fact backed by geometry and physics.

it does not surprise me in the least that the majority of OTers are truck drivers who back into spaces. Goes with the mindset of the board, like the politics.

I do it in a parking garage to prevent tailgate theft. I back up until my hitch hits the wall. Impossible to steal tailgate.

Yes, it is. People are stealing tailgates like crazy. It is ridiculous.

Why? Is there really a black market for tailgates?

Thank you, I can understand that.

I swear this might be the least divisive issue I've ever seen on the OT. Even the thread about the guy leaving his kid in the hot car had a few contrarians. Backing into your spot is hallowed ground around here.

Yes

Most trucks have locks on the tailgates now. Google tailgate locks and see all of the ways that companies have come up with for locking mechanisms.

I can buy that it is safer to back in and pull out where you can see pedestrians and traffic, but idk if you can say it is easier when you've got to back in or out at some point.

Drive around and see how many drunk asses have crunched in their tailgates. Look up the price of a new tailgate for a big truck. Easy fix is to steal one.

As Fred said, they now have locks to prevent theft. Nothing is sacred anymore.

Who do you think would buy a used tailgate? Body shops.

As someone who drives a crewmax tundra and parks at LSU stadium lot, it's easier to back in.
