A copperhead has hourglass markings with the thin part of hourglass being in the middle of the back. This is clearly not a copperhead.

Yeah and I’m guessing you’d be the first one in line to hand out a Darwin Award if he had gotten bit by something he assumed to be non-venomous.
If it’s in my garage and it looks remotely venomous (pretty much all of them to me), it’s taking a shovel to the head. frick a water snake. Should have stayed it’s arse in the water.
