Yeah Tony was definitely an a-hole, and not even the likeable kind really.

But he was honest, and he did go out of his way to sample the local culture and listen to their complaints and had no issue giving them some push back on them either.

His show refined my love for cooking after I grew out of watching Man Vs Food with Adam Richmond in college. I respect his intention, understand his personal demons, and I hope he's resting in peace.

AB never came across as an a-hole or douche at all IMO.

Opinionated. Hardened a bit by his demons and craft. Empathetic. Genuinely curious about food and cultures. Great taste in music and film. Fun. Honest.

I get not everybody liked his shows ... but this wasn't a schtick, it wasn't phony ... And he made his mark in a very long term, consequential way.

My vote is Awesome.

I realy liked his message of going hyper local and trying not to be a tourist. I travel a lot and this is how I roll.

That said he came off as really pretentious and douchey and I dont see the attraction. I'm so tired of seeing that "eat the cream sauce" quote.

Accurate.

a-hole isn't necessarily a bad thing. It means he will speak his opinion even if u may not like it.

Great post. As a dickhead myself, I can see how people might perceive him in a negative way for his cynical nature. And thank God for those positive people that always have something nice to say. But for us folks that trend towards cynicism and gallows humor, yet still find genuine enjoyment and beauty in life, his perspective was refreshing and relatable.

Ultimately, he bitched out when it came to prioritizing his own feelings above his daughters. He'll foverver be a coward in that respect. But it's possible to be both fatally flawed, and a net positive to society, overall, and I think he was both of those.

Some people in life are complicated, and don't easily lend themselves to a "love'em or hate 'em" scale.

Hypocrite.

Hung out with Obama, which is ok.
Was asked if he’d eat a meal with Trump, he instantly said no.

Had one image he wanted to project, in reality he was completely different.

I used to really enjoy his show and there are times when I will know some random shite because I saw/heard it on his show.

I like both Ramsay and Bourdain. I enjoy the entertainment of Gordon Ramsay shows and I actually have found that for Hell's Kitchen, specifically, I have learned a lot about cooking from watching it.

I don't really see Bourdain and Ramsay in the same space in my head, besides them both being on TV. Ramsay is an elite chef with an intense style that translates to TV well.

I see Bourdain as a mid-level chef who can talk about food, perhaps, better than he can cook it. Which is not a bad thing at all, just different than where Ramsay is coming from.

Ramsay plays to the cameras much more than Bourdain and their TV styles (and personalities) are just very different.

If you want to portray an image of an “every day guy” who bridges differences in culture and difference of opinion by sitting down to a meal, then don’t be a hypocrite if it’s suggested you sit down to a meal with someone on the other side of the political spectrum. It likely would’ve been one of his higher rated shows, and following the mantra he preached he may have learned something.

Dude had his demons, and wasn’t an acclaimed chef. He made a living mostly as a drug addled brunch cook, with a team of drug addled cooks trailing along with him.

Before he died he decided for whatever reason to start a war with Guy Fieri, who again was just an “every day guy” who also stumbled into stardom.

I liked watching his shows, but if you paid attention you could see his struggles. He was wanting to act like the basic guy sitting in a dark bar drinking beer, but was dragged into the liberal land of celebrity. You could tell he was very conflicted.

Some local acquaintances knew him for years, he was a prick to a lot of people. His filming at a local Waffle House with an acclaimed local chef was a perfect example of him trying too hard to act normal when he was conflicted about being a celebrity.

He died a douche’s death. He mouthed off to a hitman that was kinda smashing his “girl”.

CNN has video of the guy scoping him out in the last episode but ain’t getting involved.

Most Chef's are narcissistic douche's. Especially one's with a Television Show on a major Cable Network and a heroin habit
