I've seen them for $5k. Usually about $1500-3000 is standard, but a lot go higher.
Expensive to give birth and they have small litters.
A former relative had a female EBD who was bred and had pups. Since I was home during the day, I would go check on the mom and pups in the kennel. She had about 4-5 and ended up killing all but one by laying on them and smothering them. Apparently this is common.
WTF? I have never seen such an unmaternal instinct in a dog. She would lay on them and refuse to move even as they struggled. I would struggle to push her off of them. It was horrifying.
I would have taken the pups from her and hand raised them but it wasn't my dog and pups so the dumbass owner left her with the pups till she squished them all but one.
What a dumbass dude. He was in it for the money so thankfully he did not achieve any success with that. I hate idiot breeders .
I dont mind a bit if you downvote this. Just reading it made me want to downvote it because it is so awful and trashy. In fact, let me be the first to downvote this BS.

I've had two. They're great dogs and a good bloodline will have minimal health issues. But you likely won't find that for less than $2500. A $1500 bulldog will cost you thousands.

Actually, it's not uncommon in many breeds. In fact, it's not uncommon in the animal kingdom, especially if they are new mothers.

. I think getting one from a Breeder that has a good history helps a ton. You have to take care of them though. If you are just going to let them get dirty and not bath them, it will cause issues.
You pretty much summed it up with this statement here. Do your research on the breeder. You can pay now or pay later with dog breeds.
EBD are not a breed you just feed twice a day and bath couple times a year. They will require a bit of attention when it comes to their hygiene. Most have skin issues but with proper cleaning and the right food you can curb most of this. As others have stated, they can have major health issues. But in prospective, most pure breed dogs do.
I have a 4 year old EBD and he is a clown on 4 legs. Not a day goes by that he isn't doing something to make me laugh. I've had rescue dogs all my life and this is one of the best dogs I have ever had. I would in a second buy another one based off the personality and affection he has shown my family.

Love my EBD but he is damn expensive. Probably have a health issue once a quarter and it ranges from skin/coat rash to bladder stones to his tail needing to be removed.
They awesome dogs though. Funny as hell, very needy, loyal and cuddly. But again, be prepared to spend some money.

Yes, I have one. He is 4 years old, and he is cool as hell. Males are harder to house break than females, so crate training is a must for them. They will piss and shite everywhere.
He loves all people, but he is extremely hardheaded. He isn't super intelligent, but he can't be tricked after the first time. Basically, brute force is the only way to coax him into doing anything he doesn't want to do.
If your breeder doesn't dock the puppy's tail, be prepared to wipe his arse after every dump he takes. I bathe mine once a week. He hates baths, so that is always fun. He gives me the least shite for it.
Wet wipes are a must! You have to clean their face folds on a daily basis. Clean their paws between the digits.
Do not feed them food with soy in it. It can kill them. They will swell up like balloons and fart forever.
The only problem I had with mine was he had lash trying to grow in his inner eyelid. He needed a minor surgery to get that fixed. It was 500 bucks.
The vet I use charges me about 400 bucks for each visit twice a year.
They can become expensive.
As far as what I feed him, he does best on puppy food because he has a longer neck. They don't chew, so they swallow damn near everything. Also, they will eat anything or do anything for food. Stay away from potatoes, as the starch causes problems in their face folds.
Mine was very high strung for about a year. He grew very fast, but didn't fill out all the way until about 2.5 years.
They snore, fart, make funny noises and will make you laugh. At the same time, they are great with kids and new people that you introduce to them. If someone isn't supposed to be there, mine knows, yet they could give him a t-bone and rob me blind if I didn't have a security system.
They are extremely loyal, and they know where home is located. Mine is attached to me. He also loves my mom when he gets to see his grandmother. He loves my older brother as well. He likes my wife, and he is very protective of my 2.5 year old son.
Lastly, they may seem docile and not that active. When they turn on their switch, they don't know when to quit. Although they're what is left of the old English Bulldog, that old temperament is still inside them. They used to bait and take down bulls. Needless to say, they can fight and kill other dogs if they feel threatened. The loose skin allows them to maneuver in a fight. The folds keep blood out of the eyes. Their drive won't allow them to quit in a situation like that. They're 45-to-70 lb bowling balls with legs with a lot of muscle. If you dont plan on breeding, get it fixed. Male territorial pissings get old!

Oh yeah... Children's cherry Benadryl is a must. Grass pollen makes their feet itch. 1 mg per pound of weight.

Owned one for years.
An excellent breeder will produce pups with less health problems. Many breeders inbreed which contributes to the health rumors. That said, sinus and allergy issues are a a concern. Skin issues can be a problem and the southern heat can kill them if you are not careful.
Feed them good food, but watch their weight. You may need to cut richer, holistic foods with canned greenbeans. I found that giving them only filtered water helped with skin, coat, and general appearance, especially for white fur. Skin fold or "rope" above the nose requires regular cleaning and even powdering. Yes. I said powdering.
They snore, fart, and barf like grown arse men, so be prepared. They eat and drink quickly and sloppily (hence the gas and barf) so we used to only feed and water him outside to control mess. Mine shed like a Mfer, especially when nervous. Their temperament is "borderline furniture". Very subdued, but do get excited in small spurts and will play. Great with kids.
Ours was more work than we bargained for, but we don't regret having him for one second. He was a perfect pet for us and always a hit with guests. You couldn't look at him without laughing. May God rest his soul.

Expensive, don’t live long and not a healthy breed. They are the crown jewel of inbreeding.
Get a doodle.

This is the quality of an English Bulldog that will forever prevent me from owning one. Lovely dogs- but between the health problems and the musk they are for visiting only.

I did not know they had so many health problems.
Does that come from in-breeding?

I will never buy a pure bred dog. Too many good dogs at the shelter that need homes.

Some of it does. Its a lucrative breed and they tend to have small litters. The main issue is man's influence on the breed. They've been engineered for a certain look and that has lead to major issues. Shorter noses, underbite, narrow hips, and wrinkles have all been engineered in for appearances and all cause health problems.
Here is a painting of one from the early 1800's

See the difference?

I definitely know where you're coming from. I doubt I own another dog after this one.

There are dozens of better breeds out there, no matter what type of dog you're looking for. EBD's can be good dogs, but you were seriously rolling the dice.
If you want to get a designer breed get your wife a doodle. They don't shed, have minimal health problems, are extremely easy to train, and get along with virtually all other animals.

My roommate has one and it’s the worst dog ever. Money pit, short lifespan, lazy, worthless.

They cannot mate without help.
They cannot deliver pups without a C section
They have breathing problems.
They die after short lives.
So generally a retarded breed that should never have been created outside of nature. Sort of like UGA.

I like all dogs, but they have to be just the dumbest and laziest dogs in the world.
