Look forward to transporting leeches who call 911 so that they don't have to wait in the ER lobby.
I love sending people to the lobby anyway (assuming they don't need emergent medical attention, which many of them don't). The look on their faces

There are better options in the medical field besides being a paramedic. It will take you about 1.5-2 years to become a paramedic. In that same time frame you could get your RN. The biggest problem you have is lack options, you run calls, that’s it. There aren’t many supervisor jobs so career progression is slow. You will get burnt out, everyone does. From the outside you would think that it’s an unpredictable day but in reality it’s the same crap day in and day out. You will see the absolute worst in people and it will change you. Don’t have the misconception that you are saving lives every day because that isn’t true. I’ve seen things that I absolutely wish I could erase from my memory. The best thing I ever did was get out of that field. And there’s no money in it either. Go to nursing school, you have more options, you can do the ER, the floor, a clinic, home health, surgery, and so on.

If you are starting from scratch it’s gonna take longer than that nowadays.

RN is probably a better route. I have a friend with PTSD from his time as a paramedic. One of his most vivid memories is a van that flipped where the kids were unrestrained. A little girl (~2-3 years old) got pinned under the van and the family is there crying and freaking out begging him to save her. He's digging with his bare hands, with his partner, to try to get this girl out of the dirt under the van. After that failed they somehow managed to get the vehicle up high enough to pull her body out. She had been flattened like a pancake. You can't unsee some things. I work in the ER but I have mad respect for the paramedics/EMTs who see the worst of it and pronounce people on the scene without me having to see that shite.

I am but I'm also a firefighter and don't work for an ambulance service. If you want to become a paramedic do it! But know that you will be not be getting hardly any sleep, will be going into a lot of shitty situations, and won't get paid hardly anything to do it. Granted, I love my job and I love helping people. But you truly have to ask yourself if you are willing make the necessary sacrifices it takes to do this job. It's not for the faint of heart.

I use to just feel burnt out as I’m tired of being up all night when we are not to allowed to sleep during the day at work. It’s not always one particular call that gives you PTSD, it can even be multiple “kinda” bad calls over the years (you see enough dead old people can start to even bother you). I had worked several child fatalities and thought I got through them fine. Finally worked one that slowly got to me, developed severe anxiety in public, panic attacks, etc, never in my life had those. I learned how many of my coworkers were on benzodiazepines after I got on them. It is alarming
ETA: I only take them to sleep now, not at work of course. I’m much better and no longer have issues. I got a good wife who helped me through it...... no pics

29 years, no complaints, it’s tough, but so is being a nurse

what is your biggest regret...the money?...the resulting health issues? or the shite you have to see?
All of the above. The money is good if you're willing to work whenever they want you to... And that is A LOT. The back and pain issues and anxiety from the shite I did see suck.

The two year nursing programs usually require a semester or more of college level pre-requisites to enter the program, and the actual programs are 5 semesters, 3 years is more realistic. Most hospitals today require a 4 year RN/BSN so employment opportunities for non-BSN RNs are limited.

The answer to your needs is spelled Baton Rouge or St. George Fire Department. Greatest job ever. You work only 10 days month usually and when you are at work it’s like hanging out with your buddies for 24 hours.
If you really want to be a medic try to get on with BR EMS and not a private ambulance company like Acadian.
