I used to get gout attacks often. It really motivated me to lose weight and I lost 85 pounds. Now I rarely suffer attacks but it can still happen if I don't eat too much sugar or carbs for a few days.

my Father in law had it and he has a high pain tolerance and he was crippled from it for a week
I think brewers yeast is a big cause for flare ups

I work with a guy that has chronic gout and he's probably 5'7" 150 lbs. Some people just have higher levels of uric acid.

How would one know if they got the gout?

You're right. But if a sufferer is overweight, it may be something that they can try and see if it helps. I'm not saying it's 100% effective (I still get attacks occasionally despite being at a more normal weight for the past 2-3 years) but I've read others say losing weight has also helped them.

Usually intense pain/soreness in your big toe. The first time I had it I couldn't put a shoe on for 3-4 days. I've had it two other times where it wasn't that bad. Haven't had an issue with it in 5-6 years at this point.

I would have thought I'd be a prime candidate but I don't think I've had it.

It's pretty cruel that it's caused by beer and red meat and not brussel sprouts and wine coolers.

Are there other indicators of gout? I ask because I’m a diabetic with neuropathy in my feet. I don’t feel heat, cold or pain in my toes and parts of my foot.

If you have some free time this summer we could make you a Youtube star.

I got The Gout in my big toe a couple of years ago. Felt like a blowtorch was doing work on my toe. It lasted a few weeks, but thankfully I don't have flare-ups.
I wouldn't put it in the class of a kidney stone attack but it ain't very far down the hall.

I've heard of people getting it in their elbows and other joints. It's basically a bunch of crystals that form.

my friend and neighbor had this
took medicine that didnt help much and suffered for a few years until it just went away, much like hemorrhoids, at a certain time in life some people get this stuff and it takes time to go away

Ah, that explains why I've never gotten it. I don't believe in crystals and all that new age stuff.

Probably curb the high fat and unhealthy diet (red meat, drinking alcohol, etc). Drink more water, speak to a dietician/nutritionist. There isn't a cure, but you can have a better lifestyle going forward if you make some serious changes.
Hope you feel better

Get a shot of steroids to clear up quick, test urine and get on meds to reduce uric acid, ask doc for some anti-inflammatories for when it flares up.

If you had gout, you would know it. The pain is incredible.

It's effective, but can really tear up your stomach. Usually a few days of indomethacin will clear it up.
Second the indomethacin. Combo with percocet helps in an acute attack.

Good beer is enemy number one, sad to say.
