I hope the mayor has an impact plan to bring food and water to anyone trapped. And an evacuation plan for those whose homes get water.

However, the pumps are never turned on in time. How this isn't a completely automated system is amazing.

Human decision making is an interesting thing. As the rain was piling up I was absolutely stunned that the NWS office wasn't issuing some sort of severe thunderstorm warning, or special weather statement, or SOMETHING. It wasn't until the damage was done when they finall issued a flash flood warning.

When you have rain falling that fast... by the time you realize you need to turn them on, and the time it takes to turn them on, it's too late.

But even if there was some sort of automated system... no system in the world can handle 5.5 inches in 90 min. Or... maybe such a system is possible to create, but the cost issues involved are similar to the cost issues of Cat 5 protection.

Funny... in a few months the three new pumping stations will be operational. 1 billion dollars spent...and they won't be automated either

What is the perk of automation?

I can only think of drawbacks.

Such As?

I'm saying automated as in being able to fire them up remotely.

I guess it's not the same thing but the fact they will still have to man the pump stations to fire them up seems ridiculous.

You really want to start a few 1000hp pumps remotely?

They can probably be started remotely if necessary.

they blocked the drainage off in the FQ for the Bourbon street repair and now all the water is just collecting down in midcity???? (might be a stupid question, but for this to happen 2x in two weeks is just insanity)

I smell one hell of a lawsuit. That dumb fricking Mayor's a-hole is puckering up like duck face selfie on Facebook.

Anyone that doesn't think actuated pumps can't be started remotely is an idiot.

Especially pumps that keep an entire city dry

I though the rain water pumped to the lake? Why would construction in the quarter cause an issue in mid city?
