Anyone else stuck in NOLA??
Would the low wall canal design handle the volume any better?
Short answer: no, they would have less capacity. The longer answer is that it wouldn't handle more water as in theory less water would be flowing to the large outfall canals. Old engineering theory in the area was you wanted to get water out as quickly as possible. The new theory is detain, retain, drain. Detain what you can where it falls, retain in large areas what you can't detain on site, and drain the remainder. Simplified to slow, store, and drain.

My guess would be if the stores are already full there begins an issue

This reminds me of a conversation that took place in one of the second Dutch Dialogues or Urban Water Plan charrettes. There was a group of us, both Dutch and American, trying to work out a large-scale system theory. One of the Dutch engineers asked, "remind me what the annual rainfall is here?" An American engineer said, "60." The dutch replied, "So 60 centimeters, alright, we can do this. It'll be difficult, but doable." The American jumped back in and said, "No, 60 inches." The look on the Dutch engineer's face was priceless. That was the moment it hit him how difficult drainage is in New Orleans vs. Holland.

And by the way, sometimes we get 10% of that in a couple hours.

Judging by the photos, does anyone in New Orleans own a decent pair of wader boots or do they just enjoy having their legs marinate in water that god knows what's In it. Oh well, Laissez les bons temps rouler, I always say.

I just go knee high.
Above that I am staying above the waterline and drinking.

I'd say walking around in waders would be a bad idea. Walk into a pothole and you are literally sunk. I wouldn't do it, for the same reason I won't wear waders in a boat.

Was stuck in a line of cars near Mandina's but turned around and managed to get to Besh Steak House via N. Carrollton, Esplanade, going through Treme to S. Rampart and through the FQ to get to Harrah's.
Took me a long time. I think I was stopped on Canal for at least 90 minutes. Once I was able to get out of the line of cars, it probably took another hour to get downtown.

"Stranded vehicles continue to make some intersections in New Orleans impassible on Sunday, and some vehicles may be “courtesy towed” if residents are unable to move them, city officials said.
Residents with stranded vehicles in the middle of roadways or intersections are asked to move their vehicles to the side of the road or a parking lane “immediately,” officials said in a news release.
In order to reopen traffic, the Department of Public Works and New Orleans police may “courtesy tow” vehicles to the side of the road. Any vehicles abandoned on interstates or major roadway ramps may be towed to the city’s impound lot. Residents will not be charged to retrieve their vehicles, according to the news release.
With more rain expected today, residents will be allowed to park on neutral ground to keep intersections and streetcar tracks clear, the news release said.
All vehicles must be removed by midnight on Sunday so that RTA and other services can operate on Monday morning, officials said."

The strange thing is areas are flooding that don't typically flood.
I've lived in Mid City for quite a while and have never seen it flood like this. I also can't recall the CBD and quarter ever flooding like this.
Something isn't right.
Mitch is doing this to the middle class. Isn't this obvious?

I just posted in another thread that I live in the lowest part of the city, bottom of the bowl and the water didn't even get over the curb on my street. The only time in my 20 years of living here my street flooded was for Katrina.

Ok, I'm simply speaking of boots not the full chest high waders. Jesus. You might also walk on something sharp cut your foot open and get some flesh eating bacteria.

Wasn't knocking you. Floodwater is pretty nasty.
I just keep a pirogue tied to the roof and an axe in the attic!

My car ended up with aboit 6 inches of water in it, which I'm assuming it'll be totaled... car is only 11 months old
