Thinking about a long weekend there. Any tips on sights, hotel, etc?
Do the golden circle tour, but pass on the blue lagoon.
Also, do the tour of the facility where they make all their energy from the shifting of the plates and hot springs. It's pretty cool.

I went this last summer for two weeks.
Reykjavik is easily walkable and accessible. Eat at Grill Market, Fish Market (same owner), and Dill. Drinks at Lofthaus.
You want to travel the Ring Road. There is just an impossible amount of stuff to do, so you will want to consult a travel agency and have them create an itinerary for you, in addition to booking lodging for you in the small towns across the ring. I highly recommend the Westman Islands to the South as a detour. Stykkisholmur to the North is a small town with a ton of mindblowing outdoor stuff around you. I also second the black beaches of Vik. The wealth of sights and attractions in iceland is hard to convey.
Prepare to not get a lot of sleep. In the summer, it doesn't get dark til about 3 and you'll be up around 7.

Best friend is eloping there in March. It seems to be a very outdoorsy place. The caves on the beaches are popular, and rightfully so as they're beautiful. I believe she is getting married at Vik beach, which is a black beach. Looks beautiful in photos. Hot springs seem to be popular too.

Yep. Vik has black beaches. And yes it is beautiful.

Were you born in the states or did you immigrate here? And do you speak the language? Got to visit Iceland (I have a friend who is Icelandic) and it was a wonderful experience. People were very nice. I still have a bag from Bonus because that pig is hilarious looking
ETA: Go see the penis museum. It's hilarious and pretty cool to see.

My mom is from there. I was born here in Georgia. I don't speak Icelandic. Wish I did but only know a couple key phrases and yes no and thanks. Mom is fluent obviously but it doesn't matter as everyone there speaks English.

It's really impressive how well everyone speaks English. But It's not really surprising when you consider how much of their TV, music, media, supermarkets, etc. are all in English.
How did your mom adjust to the states? I imagine it must have been quite the culture shock, especially going to the south

And they all have cool last names
Eivør Pálsdóttir, for example. Cool singer, cool name. Dad was "Pals" making her "Pals' daughter" or Pálsdóttir.

Fun story: I almost died on WOW air. They had an issue at takeoff and some cargo that wasn't properly fixed down ended up shifting and it made it difficult for us to take off. We bounced several times on the runway before getting off the ground. Most fatal plane accidents happen on takeoff and landing, so it was a scary experience. The airline is small so after the event basically all the employees had to meet with the higher ups to discuss what had happened.

This thread needs some pics. These photos aren't mine but they're from the Laugavegur trail, which is stunningly beautiful and other-worldly at times. Even if you're not into multi-day hikes, going to Landmannalaugar (end/beginning of tail) for a day is worth it. There's a natural hot spring and a number of cool day hikes.
