2000s Lexus

Not sure why anyone would buy an old luxury brand for a first car. Everything is 2-3x more expensive to fix.

No, it's a Lexus. They do share many parts though. But Lexus generally is a better product than Toyota.

Tighter tolerances for body, fit and finish, higher end leather and wood trim (made by Yamaha Pianos).

this is more akin to a toyota than a bmw or audi.

see other replies here; its a very reliable car and parts are not that expensive.

E46 is cheap to maintain too.

Parts can be had on Amazon for super cheap.

Reliable, nice vehicle that you can buy at a great price. Used Lexus (most models, but not all) is probably the best bang for your auto buck out there.

My boss drives a 2003 (ish) that has about 240k on it and it is still going. You're going to run into issues just because of age (mainly cosmetic) but I'd go with the 95k.

Really regret getting rid of my 97 4runner. Owned it for 7 years and never had a problem (replaced antenna and another part + regular maintenance in 7 years). Got a car 10 years newer and have had multiple problems in the 2 years I've owned it.

Does he know the largest prerequisite to driving an IS is having a vagina?

Those cars are notorious for having a rear main seal oil leak, as that is a costly repair as well.

My dad had a SC300 with this issue. Very costly. 2JZ-GE motor is very stong otherwise though. It was a pretty sweet car for late 90's

Truth.

08 Lexus LS460 with around 100k miles is still one of the nicest luxury sedens out there. Can be bought for $15-$18k.

The 2jz is what he's Gaga over and for good reason..... one of the best motors ever created. I believe what makes them so unique/popular is their ability to withstand modifications(turbo/tuning) using stock internals.
Just so u know those Motors are capable of 1000+ hp if he wants to turbo it so I'd just make sure he doesn't kill himself he's gonna love that car.

not the one in that car.

Tell your Son that the IS doesn't have the 2JZ motor he needs to be interested in.

The 2JZ-GTE's naturally aspirated and easier-to-find older sibling, the 2JZ-GE, is based upon the same short-block and nearly identical but higher-compression rotating assembly, but as far as Toyota's concerned, is only good for about 230 hp. You don't care about these. Stay away from them by not looking underneath the hoods of non-turbo, fourth-generation Supras as well as Lexus' IS300, GS300, and SC300.

Hopefully he understands the difference but and 2JZ-GE with a turbo kit can make some good power. Most I have seen a GE dyno was 800 whp. Depends on your goals, if you just want streetable power the GE is fine.

yup. mast kit is $20 and i change mine everytime i change timing belts because the crappy plastic mast gets brittle then breaks into pieces and you have to pull the whole thing apart. better to just swap it every 100k miles because its a 30 second swap if its not broken.
