I know that chiropractors were pushing to expand their practice in Louisiana in order to perform adjustments on infants

The guy I see occasionally has in house massage therapy. This is FTW. They all have some type of silly pre treatment. A roller bed or e-stim TENS unit (sp?). They are all meh.

But a 30 minute massage before adjustment only costs your co pay? Worth it to me.

Many of them ABSOLUTELY over treat.

He didn't do my neck but I did ask him about it rather bluntly. His response was 11 people since like 1950 according to his insurance company. I asked a shitload of questions. He spent probably 45 minutes with me. Not including the tens unit/ ice on my lower back.

Then he picked an insurance company who doesn't do their homework or he's lying.

Chiropractic's Dirty Secret: Neck Manipulation and Strokes

Form the article
quote:

In 1992, researchers at the Stanford Stroke Center asked 486 California members of the American Academy of Neurology how many patients they had seen during the previous two years who had suffered a stroke within 24 hours of neck manipulation by a chiropractor. The survey was sponsored by the American Heart Association. A total of 177 neurologists reported treating 56 such patients, all of whom were between the ages of 21 and 60. One patient had died, and 48 were left with permanent neurologic deficits such as slurred speech, inability to arrange words properly, and vertigo (dizziness). The usual cause of the strokes was thought to be a tear between the inner and outer walls of the vertebral arteries, which caused the arterial walls to balloon and block the flow of blood to the brain. Three of the strokes involved tears of the carotid arteries [3]. In 1991, according to circulation figures from Dynamic Chiropractic, California had about 19% of the chiropractors practicing in the United States, which suggests that about 147 cases of stroke each year were seen by neurologists nationwide. Of course, additional cases could have been seen by other doctors who did not respond to the survey.

There are a wide range chiropractors. Many are quacks or have no business masking as a medical professional. Just make sure the person you go to is an actual expert in muscular-skeletal treatment not just some guy that insists you call him Dr.

I've been to David Corbin here in Baton Rouge. He's served as Chiropractor Physician for both the LSU and Olympic track teams. I trust him much more than any general practitioner MD.

I've never met one or heard of one.

I'd only go to one who is also an MD.

seems like reasonable advice.

My only experience with one was awful. I hurt my knee in an alumni softball tournament. A guy from my class was a chiropractor and told me i impinged something in my leg. He wanted to give me an adjustment, so I could continue playing.

I went to the emergency room, and turns out I had a torn meniscus. Had I followed my classmate's advice I could have really damaged my knee.

Faith healers, Crystal Healing shops, holistic medicine, and niche voodoo shops all do a brisk trade as well.

It doesn't mean any of them are actually medicine.

Like them, the only doctor on staff at a Chiropractic practice is Dr. Placebo.

I had an injury that I thought was my back, pinched nerve/ sciatic pressure. I would randomly have sharp stabbing pain on my inner thigh near my groin. Pain would come in waves from being perfectly fine to being unable to take a step. Corbin took a quick look at me and immediately told me it was a hip injury (sports injury from rugby) where something was misaligned and it would have never healed on its own. He used the electrode treatment to loosen everything up and basically (as far as I could tell) physically realigned my hip. Within two treatments I was 99% better. I haven't had any pain since, 4 years.

There are lot of DC's that I would avoid . But when you find a good one (which may be like finding a good ambulance chasing trial attorney), they do wonders. That being said, I bet 97% of DC are pure crap.

ETA: I have seen two DC's in my life. One was awesome. Always felt better walking out. The other? She didn't even touch my back. I was like "WTF". Complete rip off.

There was a chain popping up on every corner in the Chicago area, chiro one or something. They would have sales reps everywhere, gyms, grocery stores, even Staples. I guess they paid for the opportunity. Talked to one of the sales people once because it was a cute girl, and they were trained on a ridiculous sales pitch. You would mark down what medical issues you have (total breach of privacy) and then tell you how your spine misalignment was causing your heartburn and anxiety. Just utterly ludicrous quackery.
