Then it dawned on me that my grandfather built this shite from scratch out of real fricking wood and I suddenly felt like less of a man.

My dad did a lot of woodwork so he built a lot of stuff from scratch. Swings, rocking horses, etc.. But my grandfather, like a lot of people who came home from WWII built a two story house on his own (when I say on his own, he designed it, etc but I remember him saying there were parts he had help with), but he would come home after work and work on it, all day Saturday he would work on it and rested on Sunday (he was a devoted Catholic). I think he finished the house in 1948. The family just sold it to some people who bought it to remodel it.

People from that generation look at everyone else and say "they can't even build a house".

I agree about cursive writing. Although it may not be as important today, as in the past, there is still a need for having this ability. When my company shut down my division and I was looking for a new job, I had to fill out an application. The HR lady complimented me on my ability to fill out the application such that she could read it. Told me she gets applications daily that she cannot read.

This is a good one. People are less emotionally intelligent today. You can't say anything without someone taking it as an insult.

Cursive writing is a good one. My son doesn't know how to write it because he has never been taught , he's in the 7th grade.

Because it is an unnecessary skill.

I have a 7th & 8th grader, and neither have been taught to write in cursive, and I'm glad. What a complete and utter waste of time.

It will save you a lot of time if you visit the Smithsonian or the Library of Congress, your kids will not be able to read any of the historical documents.

I do this and have learned many skills from just searching how to do things using Google.

Doesn't that cost money? And what if there is no cell service in the area?

The other day I saw my neighbor laboring to get a washing machine into the back of his truck. I walked over and asked if I could help. He said sure. I walked over to my garage and got a few lenths of 2x10 leaned them against the tailgate and slid the washing machine up in about 30 seconds.

The neighbor was amazed at my ingenuity. It was very hard to not call the doctor who couldn't even make a simple machine a dumbass.
