Bruh my son played in Cuba and The DR. I’ve seen it up close first hand. I coached our US team. I’ve been to 10 of the MLB combines in the DR.

Trust me, until you see what these kids are up against and see how much money the MLB pumps into to DR you need to shut the frick up

Ha. Agreed on the generation of kids.

I'm not saying to expect Harper results, just that he and his dad spent an inordinate, to most kids, amount of time working on bat speed and leverage, as the video points out in his hand lag with such a big bat.

I do disagree about the state of baseball in the United States. It's never been more popular or competitive at the youth level, particularly in the warm weather states.

I've my opinion on travel ball and the real good and real bad of it, but that's for another time.

It’s so funny people think the kids making the mlb from the DR are the kids playing on the street

What they don’t get is that it’s the kids that are at the academy’s starting at age 8-10 where they live and go to school full time along with practice or lift 3 hours minimum everyday. It’s not the kids playing bottle cap baseball with a broomstick in the middle of the street.

Go to any big tourney in Florida and you will find full DR teams starting at 8. Last year they had a kid that was 8 playing up in the wwba World Series that had something like 48 home runs on the year. They are playing on fields that are 200 at the corners

It’s insane

There are some good travel ball kids playing rec leagues but they are sandbagging and are doing more harm than good. Their extra time would be better spent training and getting ready for tournaments.

Young kids will learn bad habits on rec league teams and there's pretty much no avoiding that. Also, rec leagues have kids that can barely throw or catch. It's actually kind of dangerous, especially when some of these tournament kids have $300 bats and hit like grown men, while theres rec kids that have a bat from walmart and have never seen a ball hit hard enough to leave the infield.

Tournament kids should play with other tournament kids. I put mine in a "select" league that is separated out from the "draft" league. There are some unscrupulous parents on my son's tournament team that form super teams and put them in regular rec leagues so they can dominate. It's really lame and sad, imo. Nobody really wins in that situation.

eta: I used to make fun of travel ball, and I still do because a lot of it sucks, but I wound up going with a AAA tournament team just to get him with kids his own My son will likely peak at 11 and not go far beyond that but as of right now he is an absolute unit and there's no point in him playing rec ball except in the select league which is spring only.

Having said that, I have to SMH at a lot of shite I see at tournaments. and the rings. I wish they'd stop with the fricking rings.

OP - my dad spent a bunch of money when I was that age for hitting lessons with Coach Al at the barn in Atlanta - I ended up excelling in another sport and never even played HS baseball. I’m sure I asked for it at the time but save your money. He’s 9. Go buy the old Turtle VHS’s, hell I may have them somewhere at my dads house.
