I’m a lawyer at a small firm. It’s a living. I don’t have to work insane hours. I will never be rich but it’s enough.

All of this interest me aside from criminal defense.
I have scouted out a few towns that seem to have 1 attorney, 0 attorneys, or a few that are all 50-60 (probably going to retire in the next 10-20 years).

I’ve been trying to get my wife to let me make this move, although I’m not sure it makes a ton of sense for us from a professional standpoint.
Louisiana, more than most states, relies on underlying preexisting relationships in the formation of business relationships. Neither of us have those types of relationships in towns we’d choose to move to.

There is a reason there are no younger attorneys waiting in the wings

If there is money to be made and no competitors, this isn't as important.
The issue is if there is money to be made. Rural areas are getting poorer and poorer with fewer people.

If I could make half that in the small town of my choice I would be satisfied.

What’s that?

Yeah, I love that so many courts are still video. I’m in bankruptcy court often and if not for video hearings I’d be on the road multiple days per week, oftentimes for a 5-minute hearing.

Money, or lack thereof.

I was just talking to an attorney poster from here Friday about his primary jurisdiction and was shocked to see it didn't do Zoom. It's an urban area, too.

Cause they don’t have the money to go to school? Or small town attorneys don’t make much money?

The towns don't have that much money. Rural areas are dying, both in terms of economy and population.

It certainly doesn't. Most I have met have a very highly inflated opinion of themselves.

Land and housing are too expensive to keep up with wages in rural areas. Im not real sure why, either. 30 years ago you could buy an acre for 1,500, now it’s about 10k. Lot of Mexicans have moved in, but they aren’t making that much money.

What kind of places are you seeing this? Has to be dying towns in LA and MS with less than 5,000 people and its poor as all hell.

In my experience the primary revenue stream for small town attorneys is via the public trough.
They'll be a DA or PDO, and then likely an attorney for a small town and/or a magistrate in another small town
