Dumb question. After seeing all you guys without power, I'm thinking of a whole home generator. Can you install a Generac with a manual switch instead of the ATS? Some cost savings with not having to pull the meter for the ATS install. I'm thinking that ATS units like the Generac 20kw and above, have the ATS built into it and you can't avoid it but I'm curious.

I think my switch was like $600 and I felt it was worth it incase I wasnt home when it went out (vacation or away for work) I knew it would come on and save the freezers etc.

When you are spending several thousand dollars I would go ahead and get the auto switch.

And just FYI, I have had mine for almost 20 years. If you have an issue and it doesnt want to start. in my case it was always the battery. If it is even slightly down it wont start. I took battery off and took to Advance and they tested it and said it was good. Generator still would not start, bought a new battery and it started right up. Maybe the newer ones have fixed that issue but I just replace my battery every 2 years now (its usually a 3 year battery).

Small price to pay for peace of mind.

Edit: I also buy the largest cranking amp battery that will fit in the hole it sits in.

Yeah, baw, I'm sorry. Crews aren't going to work in reds and oranges. That sucks.

Appreciate that advice. The cost significantly increases if you have to pull a meter, that's why I was asking.

Looks like maybe one more day after today with a good rain chance for Houston metro then should be mostly sunny/dry for a few days between Sunday and Wednesday/Thursday.

I hear what you're saying. Of my 22 days without power after Ida, it probably rained on about 6 or 7 of those.

frick Beryl! frick Centerpoint! A whole big chunk of Jones Road/Eldrige/Grant/CNH just went back out and the power outage number went up by around 5,000! I just got power yesterday and now it's out again!

The havent even finished the assessment in my neighborhood. Centerpoint changed the color on the map but the first lineman in the neighborhood today (second one total as yesterday evening was the very first time we saw anyone) said they changed the color but no real assessment had been done. Looking at another 4-5 days most likely. It’s ridiculous.

Don’t be mad at the linemen…. It’s those in charge that aren’t directing them.
