Nah you just sound pissed that you can't own people. Not sure why you think states have the right to secede, either. That's not true.

Idiot. You think if the US was divided into two nations in the 1860’s we would be better today? Better than a world superpower and GOAT nation?

McCollum himself has even said that memo was meant to deter the Japanese, not agitate them.

What a dumbass comment. You really think there are people that feel this way in 2020? You people are so jaded and disillusioned.

Like I said, their reasons were irrelevant.

If California Washington and Oregon wanted to secede right now, today, I would have no problem with it. It's their right to do so. It's not my right, as a Louisiana resident to tell people in California how to run their lives and that they have to stay married to me and the rest of the states. I don't care what their reasons are.

I may not like it for the rest of the country and I may not like it personally but it's their right to do it and if you want to have any sort of philosophical consistency you can't claim people have a right to self-determination and then tell them they have to stay married to a system that they disagree with.

If you're so hell-bent on ending slavery thdn why don't you agree with going to war with half the countries in Africa and the Middle East, right now? Come on, let's do it. War with everybody we disagree with. If you wanted to war with every country that does fricked up shite you would be in a state of perpetual war.

Worry about your own house and not others until they come knocking on your door.

Probably not but who's to say that that's best? Liechtenstein seems to be doing pretty well. Do you want an Empire or do you want a comfortable enclave?

My point was, this nation wasnt a hierarchical system with the federal government at top followed by the states followed by local. The federal government was more like the SEC and the states were like the various universities. The federal government was just an organizing body so that the states could play well with each other. The feds were there to lay some ground rules for engagement between the states. Not to Lord over them, suck up all their tax revenue potential from their residents and then have the states suck on their teet to survive.

Lol

Of course he's going to say that. Not like he was going to come out and say, "well Churchill and our buddies over in Europe were begging my boy to enter War but the people in America weren't having it so I needed to create a situation that would goad Japan into attacking us."

They did the same thing with the Lusitania. Germany even took out a full-page ad warning people not to ride on the Lusitania cuz they suspected it of carrying supplies for the war effort.

ETa: to fix my dumbass confusion about Germany, Hitler and World War 1 & 2.

If it weren’t for Lincoln, we would’ve lost WW1 and 2.

At any rate, USA is doing better than ever so not sure what you mean by, for the worst.

You're melting pretty hard right now. The CSA was nothing but a bunch of pissy rich slave owners mad that slavery was slowly becoming abolished

Incorrect.

It was contentious and largely unresolved but there was also some who wanted Washington to be the king of the United States. Some founders of the US still had a European streak in them. I don't view them as pure Americans and I mostly disregard their opinion.

We were going to be in a shooting war with Germany by the early part of 1942 no matter what the events in the Pacific brought with them. German U-Boats were sinking our merchant shipping and tensions were rising beyond the boiling point.

Hitler took out a full-page ad for the Lusitania? That's pretty impressive considering he was hunkered down in the trenches in northern France when that incident happened.

It's called a discussion. I'm sorry that all discussions for you involve a ton of emotion and logic never plays a part. I enjoy discussing these things for the sake of conversation. I gave my opinion. What's yours? Do you have anything interesting to add?

That was certainly part of it. But everybody fights Wars for different reasons. If you think that was the beginning and end of the reason then you have a very narrow-minded view of the world. There's contemporaneous accounts of soldiers in Civil War fighting for the Confederacy who explicitly state the reasons. They were varied. Almost none of them were about slavery since most of those guys were poor farmers and slavery was nothing but cheap Mexican immigration undercutting their labor.

Nothing's changed. You think invading Iraq was about freedom and 911?

Governments fight Wars for one reason, usually at the behest of Industry. The people that actually fight the war fight for completely different reasons.
