re: Better Day: Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

Before kids, it was Christmas Day because of the day off. Even when I had Christmas Eve off, or half days, I would still get my billable hours in because the office was a ghost town and my crew really didn't do much until we went out on Christmas Eve.
With kids, the family and excitement of Christmas Eve is 2nd to only those few hours of Christmas morning watching them jump from opening their present, getting excited about it, then watching the sibling open theirs and they all get excited about that.... (yes, my wife still insists on the organized chaos of we only open 1 present at a time in the house). Downside for Christmas is, once you do Christmas mass, it's the equivalent of a normal Sunday at the house except most places are closed, and the kids have news toys. We do dinner at my parent's house, but the cousins don't exchange gifts, and the grandparents give out cash/gift cards; so, no real over excitement there.

I’ll throw in day after Christmas. The kids are all playing with their toys, most of the extended family stuff is done, and you can kick back, relax, and watch old WWII movies and steal cigars from your FIL’s humidor

Eve. Similar to a football game road trip. The Friday night is usually the most fun. It’s the anticipation.
I saw an article awhile back that said we tend to enjoy the build up to an event more than the actual event itself because our brains give us a dopamine hit of anticipation during the lead up time.
I know for me, Christmas Day seemingly is a bit somber at times. Once everything is open and the gifts are exchanged, the end of the season begins to set in. I do enjoy the reflection that Christmas Day brings relative to the birth of Christ and gratitude for all that God has done but I can find myself a bit blue at points in the day. I suppose for me, Christmas has transitioned from the childlike excitement of waiting for gifts to a day of gratitude and reflection.

Christmas eve was always big in my family. As a kid, we always went to my grandparents house and all the cousins would open gifts, big gathering, huge deal. Once I got my own family, we would go to mass at 4, then my parents house then back home. Recently, the wife and I and our 3 kids, go to a big nice meal out at a local restaurant on the 23rd, do the Christmas eve deal at my parents house, Christmas day visit my in laws then come back home in the afternoon, settle in, and watch It's a wonderful life on Christmas night. We have started a few of our own family traditions, which I really like.

Eve is more Christmas Day than actual Christmas Day

I think it varies by person. for me christmas day and it's not close.
Christmas eve is a day to get the obligation out the way... the hectic, packed overplanned gathering.. get through that, go home and stay up late knowing we got tomorrow off.
This was possibly the best chirstmas day of my life. Kid is 2 we made cinnamon rolls, put on some cartoons and let the hype build as we had coffee (he's not old enough to just start ripping yet...we know it's probably our last year of that) He started opening at about 9 and didn't finish till 6... he didn't have that much stuff we just let him go at his pace... open stuff play open another thing when he was ready... it was fricking amazing to watch.
As for us..we opened our first bottle of cab at about 10 am, got some chinese take out and lounged while the kid enjoyed all of his new stuff...me and him played in the backyard like crazy as one of his gifts was a new grill that looks just like mine... watched the games off and on and ended the day with a walk around the neighborhood to see the lights.
We put the kid to bed pour a bit more vino and ended the evening with Christmas vacation..one for the ages

That is awesome. Mine are all about "let me see what else I have". They are grateful for their gifts, they just need to know what everything is. Of course, now the 2nd year my wife "learned" not to have other family members presents under the tree because if she's not paying attention she will need to rewrap those.

Christmas Eve for me as a kid. My mom's parents and her two sisters and their sons all came over. We shot firecrackers, played in the yard, and had fun. Came in and ate a big dinner, then opened presents from each other. We'd go out and shoot the big fireworks that lit up the sky and then everyone went home to go to bed.
Christmas morning we got up and saw what Santa brought. Then we got in the car and drove a couple of hours to my dad's mother's house. We stayed there all day with cousins we really didn't know, while our toys sat dormant in the living room. When we got home we had to get ready for bed, so we didn't get to ride new bikes, or shoot new guns until the day after Christmas.
As an adult Christmas day is when we get with my cousins that used to live down the street and visit, so it's better now.
