The blowout was hydrates and mud that froze on the surface, so they had a big, frozen block of mud encasing pretty much everything on location until it thawed.

What a mess!

Do they ever use OBM or synthetics up there, or is it all water based? If so, do they have to heat the mud tanks, or is circulation/downhole heat enough to keep it from freezing?

Water based when drilling. EVERYTHING is heated!

Before they set the tree, they will use a diesel and anti-freeze mixture to fill the hole. That's if we get that far. We could drill it, see what we don't want to see and wind up with a P&A.

The last 3 major exploration wells I've been on were all P&A wells. Maybe the 3rd time is the charm!! The last 2 were in the gulf.

Fewer and fewer of those as long as the shale plays aren't too far down the decline curve. And by then there will be very few G & G baws who know how to do it.

Thanks. I figured they would not let them use oil based up there, and LTMO would be wild arse expensive to play with up there. Plus, it would probaby get too thick with very low temps (I guess!).

Interesting. I always like to know how people drill stuff.

Yeah, same here. The whole pad is made of ice, so they don't risk using brine. They probably wouldn't let them use that anyway. You can't even take a leak on the ground up there. I haven't ever had a desire to whip it out in -40 deg F either.

It's all still conventional up here.

From the looks of it. They just rigged up. No tubing on location so I assume they are getting ready to pull pipe. If so they killed the well to get production tree off and get BOP on. Looks like 5k pipe/blind set the way floor is low to ground. They might have backed out packing glands to back out lock screws to pull wrap around or an extended neck hanger. If so, they backed packing glands out way too far. They just need to be loose in order to back out locking pins. I bet they released a packer and pressure came up annulus and went to see them.
