fred foster is kristoferson's record producer in nashville, and bobby mcgee was the secretary for the guy in the office next door to fred. The song was fred's idea, i think.

fred foster's daughter is Kristen Foster, who is a music teacher (i think) in baton rouge, and who is the lead singer for a baton rouge band called "polly pry."

Kevin Bacon is somehow related, but i cannot recall how just now.

He wrote a lot of songs while flying to the rigs offshore. He was also a gold gloves boxer and was offered a Rhodes scholarship to study literature but turned it down to be commissioned in the Army and became a Huey pilot. Volunteered for Vietnam but they assigned him to be an English teacher at West Point. Most people don't know that about the guy, and extremely intelligent person.

Yeah, that line always got me, too--Bayou La Batre? Dauphin Island? Maybe Tillman's Corner?

Also, they filled him with a hot meal, but he filled HER up with something else that was hot....

What song are y'all talking about? Not "Me and Bobby McGee", I hope. No mention of Texarkana in that one, just a mention of "dirty red bandanna"....

No he did take the scholarship, he got a bachelor of philosophy in English literature at Merton College which is part of Oxford.

In fact, he released his first recording in England, under another name.

Love this song. Tracks that run behind Alex Box? I remember the old train at the museum downtown. Only ever took an AmTrak from NO to Orlando. And a Greyhound from BR to St. Louis. I was a teenage girl, alone for both and they were terrible experiences.

Probably referring to jumping on a train hobo style but they hitch hiked instead.

Where would one wait for a train in BR in the 1960s? One of the more iconic songs from the Woodstock generation, and there is not even a place to catch a train in BR?

There was an Illinois Central depot right across the street from the Old State Capitol that was operational through the mid-1960's.

And wound up in Salinas. That's a lot of harpoon playing.
