It’s a smaller Atlanta and Atlanta sucks.

So... Is the suck less, or just more concentrated? Your expansive answer left me confused...

You need permission from the State to purchase handguns. The County Sherrif issues these purchase permits.
You can avoid the need for pistol purchase permits by getting your concealed carry license. Unfortunately depending on the county you are in you may be looking at a 3-4 month wait after your application interview is completed.

Living in Charlotte is like dating a pretty girl with no personality.
But is sex in play? That’s what matters
Yes and yes! She just lays there but it’s fine.

This. It’s one of the blandest big cities I’ve ever visited. Absolutely zero cultural identity.

I guess this depends a lot on age and what you are looking for in the place you live. If you have kids it’s hard to beat.
We moved here in 2019 from BR. The only negative is the food is major step down. Everything else is massively better. Tons of outdoor things to do, good public schools, close to mountains and beach. Year round good weather, no season is an extreme. The only real regret we have is we didn’t move sooner.

Mid to late 30s with two kids under 5. If we're hoping to do public schools, what neighborhoods are best?

How is your life fundamentally different or better versus before?

I lived there around 2000, right around the start of their population boom. It had an identity then, but that identity was a mid-sized city trying to balance being a mid-sized city while also cultivating economic growth. There was a LOT of tension between the long-term residents and the new transplants, and the long-term residents were definitely resentful at its growth rate. I enjoyed my 8 months there, but I found it hard to find a social group. There wasn't a lack of young professionals, but for some reason I just never clicked with many. Didn't have that problem in Atlanta. My only true friends I made there were the middle aged married couple I rented a garage apartment from.
I haven't been back since I moved away, and I doubt I'd even recognize it these days.

I'm in my early 30's with four kids under 7 and have lived in Matthews since our first kid. Absolutely fantastic place to raise a family. I won't repeat what a lot of others have said.
Public schools are better in Union County than Mecklenburg. If you have a chance to relocate here on the south side of the city, you had better take it now while you can afford it.

You wouldn’t. I barely recognize it from when I moved here 7 years ago.
The culinary scene is leaps and bounds better than it was even 5 years ago, so I don’t think that complaint holds water much anymore.
It was basically a farm town 100 years ago, so the old architecture is very limited and too much was destroyed in 1970’s, but some of the remaining old textiles mills have or are being converted providing pockets of character here and there.
But everything looks new, cuz it is basically.
It’s clean, crime is not awful and “contained”, very robust economy that isn’t just banks anymore.
New HQs are currently under construction right outside my office build for Lending Tree, Honeywell, and Duke Energy with a new regional HQ for Ally Bank and a new tech center for Lowe’s just wrapping up construction.
As mentioned, the location is perfect for numerous drivable weekend getaways and the airport is much bigger than many comparable size cities.
Certainly a lot of sprawl but the newish transit line has really spurred some density. SouthEnd is actually becoming a dense work/live/play neighborhood that the city lacked previously, but that’s likely not important to the OP.

Ya, I live in Columbia but almost never fly out of Columbia. Too easy for us to make the hour drive and fly out of Charlotte non-stop to damn near anywhere.
Airport parking is much cheaper at Douglas as well.

You are very proxoimate to mountains, beaches as well as grass flats with great fishing if you are so inclined. Relatively minor traffic with good job prospects and business, professional sports teams, etc.
I was very, very close to moving there a few years ago.

the triangle is kind of experiencing this now. the growth was there before but the way the housing market here has exploded, in alot of cases the tansplants are the only ones that can afford anything. so glad we bought our house 2 years ago

always funny to me when the transplants move into an area and establish some roots, they become territorial and resentful of other transplants moving into the area

I like it. My major rub with NC in general right now is the NY/NJ transplants. If you think California transplants are terrible, these snow birds are worse. Loud, ugly, and terrible politics.

wasn't directed at you personally, just a general observation, I've lived in a bunch of places and have seen this to be a common phenomenon
