Until now, Tonopah has been designated as a Dark Sky area, It attracts amateur astronomers from across the Western USA.

I guess we can kiss that goodbye.

Whereas a small modular nuclear reactor typically produces 300 MW

Nuclear is the only true ‘green’ energy.

We should still be innovating with solar but going back to windmills is stupid.

It's interesting, both times Musk has been w Rogan and energy was touched on, Elon said all it would take is 110 sq/km in rural Utah to power the entire grid consumption of the USA.

I'm too busy today to do the math on that but it's probably true at least from a solar irradiance perspective. Unclear if he's baked in the efficiency from current PV module tech or just speaking globally to the amount of energy we get blasted with. But i have myself peer reviewed case studies that do similar models and the math checks out hypothetically.

Im surprised he hasn't tried to experiment with it more in a place like rural Utah or New Mexico.

He has, not at that scale obviously but they have done plenty of large scale projects both at tesla and solar city. But it's not feasible for quite a few reasons. Mostly because you need a complimentary amount of storage to run off sun hours, secondly because centralization doesn't work in our grid very well, and lastly because it would cost multiples of his enitre net worth to even get close.

The movie was called Sahara. Came out 2005.

I’m aware. Always enjoy watching the movie even though it got low ratings.

Decent cast, love Steve Zahn.

If you ever fly from SoCal to Vegas, you will probably pass over or right by the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System

Flew by it a few times when flying private out of Hawthorne and Torrance

I have also flown that path commercially a few times to LAX but wasn't really looking for it.
