I would never set foot in Hollygrove. That area is complete ghetto, and OP is just confused. Not surprising at all there was a drive by there

Areas are good, it's the people who are bad.

My grandpa lived there in his original house until 1989- it was straight out of Grand Torino.

His brothers built most of them in the neighborhood- he was the plumber.

One day he called and said, "I'm ready to move down the bayou". Never asked any questions, he never offered a reason- we grabbed all his stuff and moved him out on the weekend.

Are you white? I thought Hollygrove was always a black neighborhood.

See the Grand Torino part minus the Asian bit.

My uncle Lloyd built many of the houses after WWII- it was a working neighborhood, nothing like it is today. They were rental properties for him- not sure when he sold them.

When we moved my paw paw out in 1989 or so (pre 90) it was scary rough- I drove past his house about a year ago and couldn't believe how much worse it was.

Glad your paw paw made it out. Hollygrove and the Upper 9th are the only areas in Nola (excluding the East) I feel uncomfortable driving in the morning.

Also of note from Hollygrove trivia is this tidbit from [link=(Wikipedia)]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollygrove,_New_Orleans[/link]:
Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School, a school under the NOPS, is located in Hollygrove. In 2005 there was a proposal to close the school. At the time the school had a performance score of 101 on a scale of 250 and the state gave it a two star rating, which was considered positive. Jarvis DeBerry of The Times-Picayune said in 2010 that the school had a "status as one of the best schools in New Orleans and the metropolitan area."

LINK ]Hollygrove New Orleans: The Cornerstone of the City's Vibrance Hollygrove: a historic and vibrant New Orleans neighborhood on the rise. Check out this article to learn more about one of the Big Easy's most cultured neighborhoods!

This link says it all about Hollygrove. Movoto knows how to sell houses because if you read the full article you will realize how affluent it actually is. I didn't realize that Cherry Creek in Denver was its sister city.

Actually The E&C VIP Lounge on Facebook.

Reading the comments on facebook it sounds like an establishment made up for mainly older folks from the neighborhood and that like to sing. Big gathering on Sundays from the after Church crowd.

Inside the VIP before the drive-by took place. Wonder if someone wanted to take out the singer?

Hollygrove Farmers Market is right on Carrolton, a major thoroughfare. It's safe during daylight. Don't go past Cambronne St and you'll be alright.
