I was working out in Walker Ridge when it happened. We had just got the ROV’s on deck, when we got word. It was a pretty quiet ride back into Galveston.
My crew got off only to be called out to work on it 2 days later. We flew out of Houma, and met our ship onsite. We ended up being one of the main intervention ships doing the work mainly because we were DP class 3, had 2 ROV’s, and a 110 ton heave comp crane. The amount equipment, and manpower out there was hard to grasp unless you were out there.
We cut the riser, and set the containment dome over the well. The debris field was enormous, and it was pretty surreal seeing that mangled mess.

The sculpture honoring them that used to be in NOLA was incredible. It makes my heart jump every time I look at it.
The Eleven
I'm an oil field wife (but we don't partake in oil field life stickers or truck nutz and I'm not friends with Jodee) and I feel for those guys' families. Would love to hear your rescue story as well.

Is the Nola sculpture not there anymore?

No, I read that they moved it to a private residence in St. Rose, LA.

Wish i had known of TD when this happened, the discussions would have been educational and hopefully more informative/factual than found elsewhere.

Can someone post a short synopsis is what caused it?

Why they moved? Not enough Biracial Transgendered representation?

Im not an engineer, but from what I interpret from the accident recreations, the reservoir where all the oil and gas was very unstable. Caused a lot of issues drilling the hole. The BOP (blow out preventer) was faulty, but still worked as designed but the pipe bowed inside the BOP. The rubber annular's failed. All of that allowed extreme pressurized oil and gas to get to the rig floor and in the shaker room. Caused the explosion when the gas got ignited from the motors getting too much RPM and failing. Since the BOP failed, the rig could not cut the riser and kill the well. The pressure was so high in the BOP, the oil cut through the drill string and also through the shears that were designed to cut the pipe. Pretty sure that is why the annular failed.
I am sure I missed something but that's my general interpretation of what I have read and watched.

They were way over budget, and behind schedule on that well. To cut cost they were using seawater to try and hold it back instead of heavier mud which cost money, and has to be shipped out to the rig. BP cut corners on a couple of items out there. Add them all up, and this was the end result.

They weren’t attempting to hold the well back with seawater. The well was actually cemented off with seawater on top of that. They then circulated seawater out and performed faulty negative pressure tests that they misinterpreted to conclude that the cement job was good.
Then the well started leaking through the cement and became uncontrollable.

Correct. Did not run centralizers when cementing. Like most blow-outs, it all started with a bad cement job.
