Correct. Did not run centralizers when cementing. Like most blow-outs, it all started with a bad cement job.

Which is why it took so long to cap off. We knew the well below the sea floor had probably been compromised. Capping it off at the well was not an option.

Once we cut the riser, and set the dome in place, we were basically waiting for the relief wells to get drilled so they could concrete it in at a much lower depth.

Still amazes me the they were able to hit the relief wells that far down, and from that far away!!

The amount of natural gas the Enterprise was flaring off was crazy. We had two crew boats that there entire job was to use their fire pumps just to spray down the sides of our boat to keep it cool.

There were so many vessels out there it felt like you could go ship to ship without getting your feet wet. They basically had what would be like Air Traffic Control out there, but for all the ships, and ROV’s.

Which vessel was where, which ROV was where, which tether would be on top of another, and so on. It took a ton of planning, and organization to cap it off. There where times it was like a choreographed dance going on. This ROV go back to its cage or top hat, in this order, and this boat move here or there.

You’re talking about 3-400ft ships all moving around in a very small area.

The day after I graduated high school took a 4 day course and went to work on the clean up. Had to wear hard hat , long sleeves , long pants and steel toe. Hot as frickin hell. We worked 15 minutes , would sit 30 minutes , then work another 15 minutes. 18 years old making $30 bucks an hour and unlimited overtime. Just piddling around looking for bubbles. Got catered breakfast lunch and dinner every single day. Was also where I was introduced the drug cocaine.

Lots of blame to go around, a list of engineering, mechanical, and personnel failures stacked.

PBS of all people did a pretty good documentary about BP’s managerial faults from the top down. You don’t see She’ll, Exxon, Petrobras, and the others with this many issues.

BP is shite from the top down, and only care about money.

Good to hear that was a silver lining. Sometimes, you just have to look for it.

I worked for Transocean a couple years after the incident, on a BP rig. They were A-holes. Company man was pompous and quizzed everyone from the CFR's during pre-tour meetings. From what I gathered during my time there, I could tell that BP was lashing out at Transocean using the book everyday and making a big deal put of issues needing to be addressed, which is hourly in the drilling industry.

I left there and went to a rig that was contracted by Chevron. Whooaaa, big difference. They were team players, always put safety first, and even helped fund solving rig issues for the crew. Safety guys were great. Chill and relaxed, but level headed and eager to address safety issues. They had integrity out the arse.

So I got Vhf to ask the rig operator at Horn Mountain if he could see it and knew which rig it was and could contact.

Then I hailed Coast guard to repoet to them we could see a rig on fire in distance. Not even a minute later shite went down. We heard rumblings across gulf and then like sonic booms sounds...then Mayday Mayday Mayday..

Not sure why, but this part gets to me. If you know Horn Mt. then you know it’s neighbor Marlin, which is my home away from home where I’m a BCO and I still remember the Mayday calls. Such a shitty feeling just sitting there and all we could do was watch.

AFter seeing how some of the BP (Triumph?) money has been thrown around here in NW FL, i was disappointed in how little appeared to go to investigating and mitigating the damage to nature. IIRC, the dispersants themselves weren't much better for the environment.

The whole cleanup seemed adhoc in large part and hopefully the next time something happens, we are better prepared.

I haven't worked with BP although I have worked with many former BP engineers. I've worked with many others including the ones in your list. The ones in your list aren't without their own faults in terms of caring about money first. I know field personnel that don't want to go on the rig anymore due to the pressure to get things done as low cost as possible. I mean Shell left people on a rig in a Hurricane.

As far as the Horizon, I had a job lined up in the oilfield and was about to graduate. Luckily my offer didn't get revoked. Knowing what I know now, the BOP situation and everything was definitely an issue. But it should have never gotten to that. The casing tests after the cement job should have never passed. Keep kill weight fluid in the hole and nothing happens. Instead they tried to reason their way into why things were happening and convincing themselves nothing was wrong. The whole time they were taking a kick. Pay even a little attention and this doesn't happen.
