And for the record, there's so many kinds of games that "what do you like about them?" is an insanely broad question. It's like asking "what do you like about music?".

I had no idea I was asking such a difficult question. Let me make it as simple as I can:

For you, northshorebamaman, who plays game XYZ, what is appealing about it? Specifically, game XYZ.

I’m not asking for some metaphysical exploration of existentialism in your life. Just curious why you, as an adult, who has the opportunity to do so many actual, real things in life choose to play video games.

FYI I don’t mean to be judgmental to anybody in this thread. Don’t be so defensive, I’m genuinely curious. There are plenty of things that I do myself that I question.

Do you like to imagine you are a soldier going out on a mission, throwing grenades and shooting up the enemy?

Do you like to imagine you are stealing cars and delivering drugs to dealers?

Do you like to imagine you are actually playing a sport?

This seems like an odd way to frame it and probably an attempt to frame video game players as losers who are reduced to imagining themselves doing these activities. The problem with that is that lots of active duty guys love war games. Lot's of car thieves love GTA. Lots of athletes enjoy sports games.

It's less to do with imagining yourself doing things and more to do with just having fun.

I read books to learn about things. To develop a skill or to understand someone or something I am unfamiliar with.

I don’t really watch movies or TV.

Now if you ask me why I watch sports, my answer is have no idea!

Ok let me try this. Let's use something relatively simple like Battlefield as an example.

I enjoy playing the game with friends because its a good way to relax. I have a number of friends that don't live in the same city, and this is one of the better vehicles to spend time with them.

I enjoy the competitive aspect, getting to outplay someone feels really good. Similar to a sport.

Battlefield doesn't have a ton of strategy, but I do enjoy some of the tactical thinking. What is the best way to get a flank on these guys? Which way are they coming from.

It really varies from game to game though. I also enjoy strategy games like EU4, which is an incredibly dry game, but can be a huge brain teaser. I also like single-player RPGs since I like game systems. I like Dark Souls since it can be so incredibly difficult.

It's a huge medium of entertainment at this point that you could probably find some game that was enjoyable to you.

OK. What do you do to have fun or blow off steam? I don't mean skydiving or something like that. I mean what do you do to relax at 10PM on a work night? Just books (and presumably message boards)?

I'm not sure what era or family you grew up in, but there is so much more to modern gaming that what was introduced before the Gaming Crash if 1983 (where I believe a majority of the bad stereotypes came from). The "moms basement" trope is tired out as many professionals I know love to play games as an outlet.

Games like the The Last of Us have a narrative and acting that are superior to some Hollywood films.

Journey is considered by many to be more like Art than an actual game.

I can read a space opera, but playing the original Mass Effect trilogy gives me a similar experience and temporarily lets me control the narrative.

Modern gaming essentially lets you play in worlds with diverse characters with the added bonus that its interactive unlike movies.

Everything else you mentioned is fine, but its the fundamental flaw with tradcons (traditional conservatives). The old way of doing things isn't always better and it leads one to overlook modern expectations of relationship and social interaction.

Defining masculinity in terms of what people do in their free time is borderline insecure.

TLDR. Take everything in moderation and realize that different activities were created to fit modern society.

Dumbasses should have done what I did...I married a woman that likes video games as much as I do. I will be 45 in a couple of months and she will be 39 this year. We have been happily married and gaming together for 16 years.

Well Mikie, don’t you suck dick on the side? You’re girlfriend/wife would probably rather you play a video game over giving rest area bj’s. You shouldn’t be the one throwing stones about this situation.

Only on days that end in Y and it's truckstops. Rest Areas were so 1980s.

Don’t know about this but back in college, I kept a young lady supplied with all the sex she could handle for several months because her long term boyfriend would rather play video games than spend time with her.
