Fulfilling all the paper work obligations is not the main issue. That issue is getting the opportunity to do so. It is the ultimate nepotism / who you know politically position and very few outsiders even get the chance. Former State Senator Francis Heitmeir's son got in. Guess who was the Association's biggest supporter in the Legislature? Literally every attempt by industry to regulate the costs associated with the Association's control of the river is shut down, no contest, every session reform comes up.

Because the original guy got in within two yrs.
He didn’t have his 1600 ton license and was given complete control of a 350’ cargo ship in the Mississippi River after 2 years.
You’re full of shite.

Don’t get River Pilots and Tug boat or crew boat hands mixed.
I’ve heard a few tug hands refer to themselves as pilots but it’s completely different.
Tug hands drive a tug in the river.
Pilots get driven to a ship when it enters the river. After boarding they stand in the Bridge and tell the ole baws to make course adjustments.
Example: “15 degrees starboard, lower speed to 12 knots”
A couple hours later when the ships hits the port they hop off, meet their driver and laugh their way to the bank
Then they might not board another ship for a couple days

One inexperienced captain who tried to do without those pesky pilots:

heard the spouses make 6 figs for being their personal uber up n down the river when they get on and off the ships.
But again, if your Dad or Uncle aren't pilots, don't waste your time. That's what I'm told when I ask.

Right, they don’t actually pilot a damn thing. They get picked up at their house, brought to the ship and picked up where it docks and brought home. Unbelievably easy job.

The ship’s captain, dumbass. These guys are like consultants. They don’t touch an instrument unless it’s an emergency.

Not quite "6 figs", but I can confirm that it is decent money.
Source: My father was a NOBRA pilot, and my three brothers and brother in law are now the same.

The same way a cruise ship does
Harbor and assist tugs

Begs the question: Did you have a better career option?

Why didn't you follow suit?

I decided at a young age that it wasn't for me, and though I make no claims of regrets, I have wondered if it is a perception that I struggle to convince myself.
I do okay for myself now, and as suggested in this thread, the business is steeped in nepotism, but it is good work if you can get it.

So you’re the black sheep of the family, it’s ok every family has one.
How many of your brothers and brother in laws are pilots?

Can you get me the pilot pick up and drop off driver job?

I need to move closer to a river apparently.

the capt on a 10,500 HP push boat has more qualifications that a retard driving a crew boat
Seems like the pot calling the kettle black.
Just like Tugs, crew boats come in various sizes and horsepower.
There are some 46’ boats that transport pilots to ships in the river and there are 200’ crewboats with 10k+ HP that carry chemicals, heavy machinery and personnel to and from the deep water rigs in the GOM
From my experience all boat captains are the same. Lifted truck, multiple divorces, house broke, complained about EVERYTHING, questionable hygiene, child support etc.
