Not gonna say at 45 I'm too old but, yea, I'm too old. Left shoulder has been separated twice and had neck surgery. I'm just starting thread out of curiosity in what people think. My oldest son has been doing jiu jitsu for a long time and he's kind of meh about judo but definitely prejudice in jiu jitu's favor. Youngest son does judo and football but he doesn't give a rat's arse about judo and is just "there"

Yes, extremely. I've done judo, bjj, karate, and aikido. A judo black belt is a scarier motherfricker than a black belt in the other arts.

Hmm. Well if you want to win a fight, the guy more effective at getting the takedown has a better shot to win.
Go watch high level judo throws. They are devastating.

Step 1: boxing
Step 2: ground game
Follow those 2 steps and you'll win 99% of the time

I've heard judo is the "blue collar" of all the martial arts

Probably because judo schools have historically been cheap, non-profit schools.

No but it's amazing for learning leverage, balance, and stability.
These all translate to just about any other sport.

I don’t think boxing is anywhere near worthless. If you get in halfway decent shape and get fast again, you could put a drunk’s arse to sleep before he ever saw you flinch. I am old as well, but I have seriously been considering doing some boxing training for just that reason.

Just go to a different thread. You don’t know shite about any of this.

Judo is good. It's all about balance, leverage and using the opponents force against them. For instance, if you push against me, I will counter that by pushing against you, then shift that to a hard pull. That can take you momentarily off balance and then I can attempt some kind of throw. Most of the time when training in BJJ, they start rolling from the ground. Judo mostly always starts on the feet. So you get more practice doing dynamic take downs in Judo and wrestling than you do in most BJJ. Lots of fights go to a clinch and that's where judo can be effective. Nothing ends a fight quite like dropping someone down hard on concrete. Where judo is weak is it doesn't feature single/double leg take downs like wrestling does. So it also doesn't work on defending against those take downs much either. Where I used to train, we had BJJ, judo, boxing, Muay Thai, and Vale Tudo, and students could go to whatever classes they wanted. I think Judo and BJJ complement each other well. Definitely think it is best to be well rounded and for street self defense, that does include weapons.

I still maybe could but haven't boxed in around 25 years. I still do the workouts, jump rope, sit-ups (mostly crunches though) and pushups. Don't jog anymore, or at most once a month, but walk quite a bit.

From what I remember a lot of what was taught in judo involved leveraging your opponent’s force against themselves. It’s definitely useful, but at some point in a fight you’ve got to go from defensive to being the aggressor.
Although I do remember fracturing my far older and taller cousin’s arm when he challenged me as a young kid and refused to tap out when I had his arm in a lock.

Uhh, did you forget about the throwing part of judo?

So, you attacked your cousin's arm and submitted him?

I learned judo when I went to USL for a couple of years back in the 90’s. I used it in a couple of bar fights. It’s crushing against bar drunks. Bar clashes end up being up close and the ability to just throw a fool was surprisingly effective against the untrained.
Now days there are so many schools with more than just grappling. I’d probably look at a jiu jitsu school.
