There was a gentleman who built a pretty successful business in Baton Rouge that was illiterate. He enjoyed books on tape and would listen to them when he could. He started out as a craftsman working with his hands and was really successful. I guess he just hired who he needed to get the books done. I met him a couple of times and he was an intelligent man. He grew up in a time where that education wasn’t there for some reason.

A lot of them can’t write either.

I encountered several people who could not read while working with a client to develop a mobile software package for industrial field contractors. We were warned ahead of time at the various sites by site supervisors of who these people were. Older people who had been turning wrenches for 40+ years. Work around was just to buddy them with someone younger.
I was surprised how terrified they were of us. Would've sworn we SpaceX and not a bunch of half arse software implementers working in the crap plants of Louisiana.

I knew one guy, years ago that actually ran his own motorcycle repair business and made a good living doing it.
His wife would do the books and order parts that he needed to complete jobs. He was a hell of an all around mechanic, fabricator, painter, etc.

I know they exist but it still seems crazy to me.
They suffer from extreme dyslexia.

I actually have 3-4 fouls that work for me who can’t read or write. All older guys who are reasonably intelligent, but they just never learned. They have done ok through hard work, but really have a lot more potential.

I used to know a old man that couldn’t read a digital clock. He couldn’t understand the concept of the phrase quarter till whatever hour it was. He said he he only went to 6th grade in school.

Please don’t spit in a man’s eye because he struggles with the written word.

An older guy that was a handyman/grounds keeper I worked with was fully illiterate.
He had his own ways to get along in the world, and had no interest in learning how to read/write. The work office actually paid his bills and handled mail for him.
A simple, hard working man who I guess juts didn't see the point at his stage in life to do things any differently.

Come to think of it, i have never come across anyone that can’t read.
Either i just didn’t know they couldn’t or just honestly haven’t

Several told us that no one, even their spouse, knew they couldn't read. Though we decided many of their friends and family just went along with the charade.
I wonder in this age how many people assumed that they had/have a disorder like dyslexia or eyesight problems? If I saw an adult having trouble reading something then I’d assume they had either an untreated disorder or couldn’t see and had forgotten their glasses.

I worked for a local police jury doing highway work and clearing rights of way when I was in high school. There were a couple of older men on the crew (late 70’s), and neither of them could read.

If there was ever a time to survive without being able to read, it’s probably now. Between telling Alexa what you want, and text to voicemail and back, emojis, and other new forms of media, a person can keep up with what’s going on and communicate effectively with just about anybody. Even passwords for electronic signatures are encouraged to be a bunch of letters and symbols.
