re: Do you know any Virginia residents that consider Virginia a southern state?

Virginia is definitely a southern state. Anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they’re talking about. Virginians fully embrace their southern heritage with the exception of NOVA because it’s a suburb of DC which is made up of transplants from all over the country and world.

and even in NOVA there are tiny pockets and remnants of 50-75 years ago of Southern heritage
go to Rose Hill area and check out the diners and grocery stores and you'll see camo hats, southern accents, etc

Definitely, I’d say the line starts around Fredericksburg, VA but you’d have to include Winchester and everything south of that too. Basically exclude the DC suburbs in VA and everything else is southern.

I think down 95 it starts to blur around Woodbridge and by Fredericksburg it's def more southern than not
west I'd say Manassas it blurs and then Warrenton it's full tilt the South
my inlaws live in Gainesville on 5 acres with horses and it's a different world than Alexandria...just 30 miles away

Totally agree with what you said, grew up there and my papaw was from elkton near Harrisonburg. He would be considered a southerner by everyone on this board. People who are from south of I-10 think North Carolina is yankee haha

I was born and reared eighty miles from D.C. When I was growing up, the area was Southern.
Remember how many Civil War battles were fought in that area. No one whose family was kicked off their farm by Yankee Generals who temporarily seized it for their headquarters could be anything but Southern.
D.C. remains D.C. except has gotten worse and spread to the surrounds.

Hampton Roads area would disagree with you

There's definitely a southern vibe to it. I grew up in Tensas Parish but have been in Richmond for 28 years and while the difference in Southernness is clear between the 2, VA still has the southern history and overall feel. Just not what I consider the south.

South West Virginia is more East Tennessee than East Tennessee is.

Lulz. All of NOVA economy is cushy government contracts, of which, we paid you through our taxes.

I live in Virginia and it's basically 4 different states
NOVA (Not southern)
Tidewater (Southern)
Richmond (Somewhere in between)
Southwestern VA (Appalachia most similar to Tennessee/Kentucky/WV)

You’re missing central VA - Charlottesville, luray and Harrisonburg areas which are southern.

Wife and I take multiple weekend trips to Luray every year to stay in a cabin, hike, and hit up wineries
love it there

Same question, but North Carolina? Is it considered the South? Came up in a debate last night.
