He got an allergy shot and a steroid yesterday. Water intake seems to have increased in the last several months.
Have the vet check the pups stomach. Visually, not to scare but there could be a block or twisting of the stomach that can cause this behavior.
Not scare honest but worth a consult

Thanks all for the responses. I’m gonna keep watching for other symptoms of the things yall have mentioned. Unfortunately our vet was bought out by private equity so I no longer trust how they’re treating him.

Urinary tract infection. Go to Walgreens and get an over the counter urine test. If positive, call the vet.

As.been stated , check for diabetes.
Posted on 1/16/26 at 5:02 am to Gee Grenouille
Yes “Diabetes” but 99% it’s steroid-induced “diabetes” from the steroid shot you said your dog received *yesterday*.
Steroid can increase blood sugar, which will increase urination to excrete said sugar, and increase thirst to replace water lost in urination.
It should pass as the steroid works it way out of dogs body, but my all means call vet just to make sure. Could also be tipping dog over edge into full blown and now you really see it.

Instead of finding a vet you trust.

Ours did this and ended up having Cushing's , hopefully this is not what yours has.
It's a terrible disease.
Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) in dogs is a common endocrine disorder where the body produces too much cortisol, often from a pituitary or adrenal tumor or prolonged steroid use, causing increased thirst, urination, appetite, panting, a "pot-bellied" appearance

You wouldn't mistake diabetic water intake with variance. Untreated diabetic dogs can drink a couple of bowls of water in a matter if hours.
Their urine also smells like ammonia, really nasty.
Treated, diabetes is manageable; untreated, they can crash and die in a weekend.

My beagle had that issue and it turned out to be Cushings
Very treatable but get some testing
Same with my mutt. With treatment it can be handled.

Steroids can increase water intake.
If he continues I’d have him checked out in case there’s a kidney issue going on.

Do you drink varying amounts of water everyday?
Could it be possible that every animal and human drinks different amounts of water everyday?
Yeah, he's probably just hungover.

Don’t get me started on PE
It makes my blood boil like no other

Our dog did the same thing. Would drink a ton of water then later pee in the house. Ended up being diabetes. Two shots a day now, but she has perked up and has more energy than ever.

Possible kidney issues. Take the dog to the vet.

He must smoked some weed or taken gummies. That stuff will give you cotton mouth from hell.
But in all seriousness, just monitor. A stray we took in years ago, started doing that one day all of a sudden and wouldn’t stop. We took him to the vet, and he had bad heart worms from probably months to years of just living as a stray. We eventually tried to treat it, knowing the risk, and the treatment weakened his heart too much and he passed.
Now… that said, one of my current dogs goes through spurts of that, and there’s usually nothing wrong. Sometimes it’s when he has diarrhea because he’s an idiot and won’t stop drinking the chlorine pool water, so he’s dehydrated.
