And this.

Is it really that difficult?
It is when the story is fake

"Billy Bob, I've been thinking about this, and I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I've lost a few in my life too, and I know it's not easy. Only you know if you need the day off to handle it. The most important thing to our organization that we maintain revenue, so be sure to do whatever it takes to make sure those three proposals are submitted on time Thursday. Can you handle that if you take the day off?"

Not sure how to handle this one. I have lost a few dogs in my lifetime and it is a terrible experience, but this employee has a few deadlines due by Thursday and I don't think he will be able to meet the deadline if he sits out tomorrow.
Remind him of the deadlines, and if he's still wanting the day off give it to him, but still hold him accountable.
It's really not that hard.

To many, dogs are more than just a pet. Some people though will never understand.

You really think I am going to come onto a message board and make up a story about a person and his dog dying? Get out with that shite.
For those that actually do give a frick about my situation, I let the guy off for as long as he needs with Paid time and myself and two others will be filling in to get the bids completed and sent in by the deadlines.

Dumbest PTO/Vacation benefit package ever.
I'm starting to believe Stout, about you.

Tell him you understand that his pet died and that if he feels the need to take a day off then that is his call. But also stress that he has firm deadlines coming up that, should he miss them, could impact his standing in the company. In other words, he can take the day off, but that does not change the deadlines for when his bids need to be completed. Work longer hours when he comes back, work from home, etc but get it done.

Are you hiring?

Sorry, we are not a multi billion dollar firm like you own.

If someone takes a PTO or V day it does not matter why. Tell him to take the work home.

Yea this dude constantly tries to troll with shitty threads like this.
Also, I like how in the span of 25 minutes, while constantly posting in this thread, he delegated all of the work out already and gave the guy confirmation to take the day off. Dude is a monster at efficiency yet was too incompetent to make this tough decision without the help of the OT.

He starts his vacation on Friday so it really wasn't that much of a kind gesture.
Posted on 11/2/15 at 7:10 pm to GTSwarms
Does time off have to be approved by his supervisor? Don't approve it if you need him

Holy shite you are a toolbox. Do you actually think that I first heard about him not coming into work approx 25 minutes ago and so I ran to my computer to type out the story on Tigerdroppings? pffft
I found out about this at 2:00 today after he left to go bury his dead dog.
