He didn't say either. Maybe she is an Alabama resident and that was the school she wanted to attend or it was the cheapest.

But med school applications are never that straightforward. Both the public schools in Alabama are 30k plus per year, so I'm skeptical about tuition issues. The in-state acceptance rate at UAB is something like 33%. She did indeed get an interview. We have no idea how she interviewed. According to UAB's data, they matriculated 127 out of 186 students who were listed as white in 2018, and 122 out of 186 in 2019 were listed as white. She seems like she's looking for something to blame. There were 15 Black students who matriculated in 2018 and 35 Asian students, which represents around 25 percent of that class. FWIW, the in-state acceptance rate in 2018 for white students was 11 points higher than the one for black students.

Singularly blaming her race for not getting in seems like a very spurious argument.

My daughter has her interview Thursday for The Medical College of Georgia. It's a lot more than grades and MCAT scores. She's done a lot of work Shadowing at hospitals, doctors offices, etc. She has a 3.8 GPA at UGA Biochem major, and her MCAT score was a 518. She did not do that well on the CASPER test though. I guess the CASPER test is the one that tests your wokeness

People who think they're hot shite, like prospective med students, dream up a lot of shite to rationalize why other people don't think they're hot shite (e.g. "They're just jealous.") Not saying that this girl from this unverified and anecdotal story in the OP is out-and-out lying about why she didn't get accepted. Just saying I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

I don't disagree. I saw both sides of this when I was on these selection committees. Kids of rich alums who thought they should get whatever.

My point is that it DOES happen, but moreso, WTF does a med school need to address "white privilege" now?!?

If I'm sick, I want the best person looking after me. I don't give a frick about their so-called privilege.

Can answer this for you, she is Alabama resident, and the school is USA. She went to McGill. She said lady in interview cut it short after white privilege statement, and she knew she was in trouble when the interviewer ask after looking over records to tell her what great adversity she had overcome in her life.

i talked to a number of USA grads, doctors etc who all indicated that they had many similar story’s and they weren’t surprised and there she should just do to a DO school, and welcome to the new world.

It’s all good I am sure that cancer etc wiil understand

Ha ha ha ha she deserved to get passed over! She should have known to apply to at least 50 schools. She had this coming.

Or maybe not apply to a school which admits 75 students a year. Having been through the process myself, it sucks getting rejected after interviewing at your state school, but that's reality that literally a majority of medical school applicants have to deal with. Given that we know South Alabama Medical School's demographics, it really doesn't support the notion that she was denied because of her race alone. I'm guessing she interviewed poorly and wants to externalize the blame.

daughter that was trying to get into an Alabama medical school. She had almost perfect 4.0 in a difficult double major at Baylor , an outstanding MCAT was on a sports team and basically worked her arse off.

This gets you the interview. However, grades and testing are nowhere near the most important things that make you the best doctor. This is why the interview is important. Unless you're just doing research or some obscure specialty, being able to communicate very clearly and getting people to talk with you is one of the most important skills. If you can't do that, it doesn't matter how smart you are, you'll have trouble being truly great at medicine. They aren't just looking for someone who can pass. That's actually the easier part.

So she bungled literally one of the standard medical school interview questions? Look, I get it, it happened to me too. I knew I fricked up, so I went and got better at interviewing by working my arse off. Again it sucks, but she got an interview, and that's where anything can happen. No part of the medical school application process is assured. It sounds like she needs to practice her interview skills as well as mature a bit, because externalizing the blame to some cause which doesn't seem to be the case for that particular medical school, given the demographic data lsusa posted.

I don't disagree with this notion at all. It just infuriates me when people mock others or laugh at this situation acting as though this person was entitled when they don't know them.

It is the "usual suspects" that jump into threads like this and start making profound statements about privilege, etc. Annoys me.

These things DO happen. I was once on the team that loved doing this, and I regret it every day. Granted this was almost 20 years ago, but the point was that this DOES happen to great students all the time, even down to the undergraduate level.

Isn’t that against the law? Do we have non-discrimination laws or not?

Did the SCOTUS issue a ruling on the Harvard law suit yet, and would that have bearing on med school admissions?

I only go to white male doctors, dentists, and vets. Because of all the diversity bullshite, I know they had to be creme of the crop to get in and pass. You can’t say that about the other demographics. Fact. I’ll change doctors if I get knowledge beforehand of being assigned a non white male doctor/dentist. I’m not racist. The system is racist and I have to protect my interests/health accordingly when dealing with a racist system.

Or you could just research the doctor, ANY doctor, before you go see them.

Well, if she's externalizing the blame by virtue of suggesting that she didn't get in because she's white with two doctor parents, that isn't a very mature coping mechanism and is worthy of ridicule. I can't tell if it's the OP externalizing or if he's reflecting her own sentiments.

I understand. Randomly calling people groomers in the middle of mostly reasonable discussion happens to annoy me. Maybe you can reflect on that and do some growing yourself.

And? The reality is that schools will reject you for any reason. I interviewed at places where the faculty talked to me as though I was going to be there that fall. In some interviews we talked for hours. One place flew me out to their campus after the interview so I could meet other professors in other departments. And then rejected me. The fact that this can happen to anyone, and statistically stands an extremely high chance to happen to a single applicant, given medical school acceptance rates, is even more reason to apply broadly. Things happen. Putting all your eggs in one basket and then interviewing poorly is just a poor overall strategy. If she wants to stay in Mobile in an effort to save money, fine, but if she really wants to be a doctor, and that's her prime goal, then she has to branch out.
